The CA-9 single-engine turboprop program is warming up, with a first flight accomplished in July and plans for FAA certification in 2013, although initial versions will be sold as kitbuilt experimental category aircraft. The high-wing fixed-gear CA-9 will seat six, offer a 250-knot cruise speed, fly up to 2,200 nm and be powered by a Honeywell TPE331-12.
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
Speaking at this year’s EAA AirVenture, acting FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell defended the track record of various agency-industry cooperative safety and inspection programs against Congressional criticism and promised to crack down on those who abuse rules governing amateur-built aircraft.
Just in time for the Oshkosh airshow last month, WSI announced FAA manufacturing approval for the company’s InFlight weather briefing system. With an equipment price of just under $5,000, the InFlight AV200’s remote receiver and antenna can display weather information on a variety of general aviation MFDs, including graphic and text TAF/Metars, EchoTops storm tracking, NowRad radar images and airmets and sigmets.
Melbourne, Fla.-based Maverick Jets has moved manufacturing of its five-seat Leader twinjet kitplane to Tbilisi Aerospace Manufacturing in the republic of Georgia, CIS, to take advantage of TAM’s 2.7 million-square-foot, ISO 9000-certified facility. Subsequently, some 50 employees involved in manufacturing in Melbourne were let go.
Beriev Aircraft, of Taganrog, Russia, received FAA Part 23 type certification for its Be-103 twin-piston amphibian at EAA AirVenture directly from FAA Administrator Marion Blakey. It is the first Russian amphibious airplane to achieve this status.

For the first time in Piper Aircraft’s 71-year history, the company has flown a homegrown jet airplane. Yesterday morning, hundreds of the aircraft manufacturer’s employees watched, and celebrated, the successful maiden flight of the PiperJet from Vero Beach (Fla.) Airport, which is also home to Piper.
Yesterday afternoon, Cirrus test pilot Kent Vandergrift flew Cirrus Design’s prototype Vision SJ50 single-engine jet to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., concluding his flight with a high-speed pass and a landing on Runway 27. After the jet was towed to a stage in AeroShell Square, Cirrus founders Alan and Dale Klapmeier congratulated the Cirrus team members who helped make the jet possible.
