Through its embassy in Tokyo, the department announced today that it will be arranging for charter flights to evacuate U.S.
Volvo Aero has been working on a new generation of lightweight engine fan frames, and is exhibiting a demonstrator on its stand (Hall 2A Stand B114). The fan frame is the largest the company has produced, and is constructed from composites and titanium. The fan frame is a complex part of the engine in terms of loads, especially as it incorporates the lugs that attach the engine to the airframe.
Enstrom 480, Goshen, Ind., Aug. 5, 2005–The NTSB determined the landing accident was caused by “ground resonance experienced by the pilots.” The student pilot/owner was flying the turbine helicopter, accompanied by a 2,107-hour CFI, when it experienced ground resonance and disintegrated. The helicopter’s tail was sheared from the body and landed 30 feet away, the front seats about 10 feet away.
Engineers from British consortium FBH (Bristow Helicopters and FR Group) are maintaining two Bell 212s that have been sent from Brunei to Sumatra, to support the disaster relief program following the December earthquake and subsequent tsunamis.
Enstrom and the FAA have published separate alert notices strongly urging operators of Model 480 turbine helicopters to “immediately” remove any elastomeric dampers and replace them with hydraulic dampers. The action follows a ground-resonance incident on August 5 in Goshen, Ind.
A largely abandoned manufacturing facility adjacent to the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport/Shepherd Field (MRB) in Martinsburg, W.Va., could become an FBO complex aimed at business/corporate aviation if two area businessmen have their way.
Nathan Landow doesn’t like the acronym FBO. The new Dulles Jet Center (DJC) that he and his sons built on the east side of Dulles International Airport in Virginia looks like an FBO, but he calls it a “flight service center.” It offers traditional FBO services in a facility convenient to Runway 19.
In mid-October the doors opened at Dulles Jet Center, the third FBO at Washington Dulles International Airport. Dulles Jet Center offers 160,000 sq ft of hangar space, a three-story, 25,000-sq-ft terminal/office building and 300,000 sq ft of ramp space. Nearby Signature Flight Support will provide fuel and other ground support services to Dulles Jet Center customers.
