The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) presented its 2014 Award for Innovation in Aeronautics to Honda Aircraft president and CEO Michimasa Fujino earlier this week at the 29th ICAS Congress in St. Petersburg, Russia. Fujino was recognized by ICAS for his “pioneering contributions” in the design and development of the HondaJet and its over-the-wing engine-mount configuration. According to ICAS, “The award acknowledges accomplishments in the development and introduction of innovative concepts in major aircraft programs.”

Two manufacturers shared the spoils of Japan Airlines’ major commitment announced last week covering a total of 47 regional jets. But the potentially bigger and undoubtedly more desperate winner proved to be Mitsubishi, the upstart regional jet manufacturer whose orderbook now shows memoranda of understanding, tentative agreements and firm orders from six customers.

Banyan Air Services of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has been named a HondaJet dealer serving the Southeast U.S. Under the agreement, Banyan Air Services will provide HondaJet sales and service for the eight-state territory that includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Honda Aircraft today named Banyan Air Service of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as the new HondaJet dealer for the Southeast U.S. The appointment replaces Tallahassee, Fla.-based Flightline Group, which was originally selected as the HondaJet dealer for this region in 2006. Banyan, based at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, will provide HondaJet sales and service for Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and South Carolina.

The Japanese manufacturer is nevertheless proudly displaying a cabin mockup of its long delayed Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ).

Mitsubishi Aircraft took delivery early last month of its first Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1200G geared turbofan at the Mitsubishi Regional Jet’s (MRJ) final-assembly factory in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Delivery of the engine from Pratt & Whitney’s Mirabel Aerospace Center in Quebec marks a major milestone toward final assembly of the first MRJ90 flight-test aircraft, which Mitsubishi expects to fly during next year’s second quarter.

Aircraft window shade company Vision Systems North America opened its new facility in Melbourne, Fla., last week and is ramping up production there for its launch customer, Honda Aircraft. Vision Systems will produce Nuance electronically dimmable windows for the HA-420 HondaJet. With the push of a button, Nuance dims instantly from clear to dark, reducing light, glare and heat entering the aircraft. In the near future, the company’s Melbourne facility will also manufacture motorized shades for other business jets, Vision Systems said.

Progress on the HondaJet continues toward certification, which Honda Aircraft expects to receive in next year’s first quarter, the company said today at EBACE. The first production HondaJet–S/N 11–is now in final assembly in the company’s manufacturing facility in Greensboro, N.C.
