A new UAV design on display here is Elbit’s Hermes 900, the bigger cousin of the popular Hermes 450. The family genes make the Hermes 900 particularly attractive to operators of the Hermes 450­–a roster that includes Singapore–as it employs the same ground control stations and maintenance processes.

Elbit Systems of America’s Kollsman Commercial Aviation announced at NBAA 2011 in Las Vegas that flight testing of its second-generation, enhanced-vision system, EVS II, is in progress on a Boeing 777 and that certification flight test of a new Kollsman head-up display (HUD) for the Bombardier Challenger 604 is about to commence.

Elbit Systems of America’s Kollsman Commercial Aviation unit is celebrating delivery of its 1,000th infrared enhanced vision system (EVS), which went to Gulfstream Aerospace. Pres Henne, Gulfstream senior v-p for engineering and test programs, accepted a plaque commemorating the event from Roy Gentry, Kollsman Commercial Aviation vice president.

As the culmination of a jointly funded cooperation program between Italian electronics house Elettronica and the Elop business of Elbit Systems, the Israeli company yesterday announced a $15 million contract to supply directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) systems for installation on Italian aerial platforms, including the Lockheed Martin C-130J and Alenia C-27J transports, and AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters.

Elbit Systems of Haifa, Israel, announced the first export sale of its Hermes 900 unmanned aerial system to a “Latin American country,” identified by various sources as Chile. The number of systems and air vehicles to be supplied is unspecified, but the contract includes ground control stations and sensors, including the DCoMPASS (digital compact multi-purpose advanced stabilized system) and radar systems.

Elbit Systems of America has completed its $85 ­million purchase of San Antonio, Texas-based aircraft ­services provider M7 Aerospace. The company, which ­provides aerostructure manufacturing and MRO capabilities, is also the current type ­certificate holder for the former Fairchild Metro and Merlin turboprops.

Israel’s Elbit Systems and French company Sagem Défense Sécurité agreed on September 15 to form a joint venture by early next year. To be based at Eragny and Montluçon in France, the joint venture will market UAV systems in France and other designated markets, and will take over existing initiatives.

German aircraft manufacturer Grob Aircraft and Elbit Systems, the Israeli specialist in electronic defense, have signed several agreements to partner in the development of a new family of trainer aircraft called the G-120TP. The aircraft will be based on a modular concept, which will result in one aircraft in three different configurations: side-by-side, tandem-seat and a four-seat models.

Elbit Systems is showcasing a wide range of its products and capabilities here at Farnborough (Hall 1 Stand C14). Among them is CockpitNG, a new pilot interface system based on a 22-inch high-definition central display. All avionics components are integrated into a single suite employing touch-sensitive technology for ease of operation.
