The FAA has issued an Airworthiness Directive for the AgustaWestland A109S requiring the modification of the electrical power distribution system to carry a higher electrical load. It was prompted by an electrical failure that resulted from inadequate functioning of the 35 amperes “Batt Bus” circuit breaker.
The FAA plans to issue Airworthiness Directive FAA-2012-1111 to address wiring issues on the Beechjet 400A. The AD was prompted by a report that the wiring for the five-volt direct-current system is undersized and does not have adequate circuit protection for the smaller-gauge wire. This proposed AD would require installing an in-line fuse in the five-volt DC system for each of the five instrument lighting control power supplies.
Fractional provider Avantair of Clearwater, Fla., has installed LED lighting in its maintenance hangar. “We currently have metal halide lights throughout our hangar,” said Kevin McKamey, executive vice president. “They are costly to run and don’t react quickly when there’s a power outage. The new LED lights provide 120 percent more lighting, are 50 percent more efficient to run and react more quickly to power interruptions,” he explained.
The breakdown in power supplies that caused serious disruption throughout India in late July has prompted the country’s government to draw up plans for using helicopters to support patrolling and restoring transmission lines. Government-owned Power Grid, which runs five separate electricity grids across India, is expected to issue requests for proposals for acquiring or leasing rotorcraft to be better prepared next time the grid fails or is damaged during an emergency such as an earthquake.
An airworthiness directive has been issued for all Honeywell TFE731-20R, -20AR, -20BR, -40, -40AR, -40R, -50R and -60 turbofan engines. It was prompted by a report of a quality escape of about 8,000 second-stage low-pressure turbine (LPT2) rotor blades manufactured by Honeywell’s Chihuahua, Mexico, manufacturing operation since 2009. This AD requires removing and inspecting certain LPT2 rotor blades. Cost of the fix is $3,480.
A proposed airworthiness directive for certain Cessna 525 air conditioning (A/C) compressor motors was prompted by reports of smoke and/or fire in the tailcone. The AD requires inspection of the number of hours on the A/C compressor hour meter, inspection of the logbook and replacement of the brushes or deactivation of the system until replacement of the brushes. When the brush wears down, the rivet in the brush contacts the commutator, causing sparks and excessive heat build-up within the motor assembly.
Aerospace and defense electronics suppliers in the U.S. are doing a better job of screening out counterfeit components coming mainly from China, and these gains will be reflected in more public cases of flagged parts, according to one electronics contract manufacturer. “You’re going to see incidences going up because we’re findng them,” said Robert Toppel, president of Axiom Electronics of Beaverton, Ore.
