Universal Avionics has completed helicopter vibration testing and approval for its UniLink UL-800/801 communications management unit (CMU), expanding the company’s line of products designed for the helicopter market. The UniLink UL-800/801 is an ACARS-compatible CMU that includes digital ATIS, pre-departure clearance, aircraft tracking, messaging, weather information and graphics. The system is also provisioned for the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network, providing a platform for future compliance with emerging datalink requirements.
The FAA’s new final rule allowing pilots to update navigation and avionics databases took effect on January 28. The rule covers “updating of databases used in self-contained, front-panel or pedestal-mounted navigation equipment.”
Constant Aviation of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport has named David Bowman v-p operations. Bowman joins the organization from Honeywell International, where he spent more than 28 years in various management positions, including several years in senior leadership roles. In his last role as senior business manager, site leader, he was responsible for overseeing multiple locations within the company’s aviation electronics aftermarket repair and overhaul business. Bowman will oversee the MRO’s four locations and more than 200 employees in Cleveland.
Honeywell (Booth No. C4304) is announcing a new global network of condition-based maintenance systems (CBMS) distributors, enhancing worldwide coverage with native language and onsite technical support.
Effective January 1, Beijing Andawell Science & Technology in China and Transworld Aviation in the United Arab Emirates joined Honeywell’s CBMS network in the U.S., Europe, South Korea and Japan. New local offices are also planned for Australia and the UK.
Worldwide deliveries of new civil helicopters will total between 4,900 and 5,600 units over the next five years, according to the results of Honeywell’s 15 annual Turbine-Powered Civil Helicopter Purchase Outlook survey, which was released this week at Heli-Expo 2013. The forecast shows strong demand focused in the first three years of the period and reflected in every region of the world. This means that demand in 2016 and 2017 will determine whether the low or high-range of the forecast is realized.

Bell Helicopter has tapped Honeywell (Booth No. C4304) to provide the auxiliary power unit (APU) and environmental control system for the new Bell 525 Relentless, which is scheduled to start flying next year. The Honeywell RE100 APU selected for the super-medium twin helicopter is lighter and more fuel efficient than competing systems, according to Honeywell. It allows operators to run critical avionics and electronics systems without turning on the main engine, further reducing total fuel consumption.

Embraer has selected the Honeywell Primus Epic 2 integrated avionics system for the second-generation E-Jet, slated to enter service in 2018. The decision is another important milestone in the program, which is expected to be launched later this year. The Primus Epic 2 integrated avionics system includes four 13- by 10-inch large landscape displays with advanced graphics capabilities.
The latest upgrade in Duncan Aviation’s “Glass Box” project is a Falcon 900B retrofitted with a full Universal Avionics LCD glass cockpit, replacing the original Honeywell SPZ-8000 cathode-ray-tube displays.
The upgrade includes five Universal EFI-890R LED-backlit LCDs, engine indicating system replacing the original engine instruments, dual Universal UNS-1Fw flight management systems with Waas/LPV/satellite-based augmentation system capability and dual Vision 1 computers delivering synthetic vision on the primary displays.
