While buyers will undoubtedly welcome the switch in the Piper Meridian from previous Meggitt Magic avionics to the more capable Avidyne Entegra system, an unintended side effect of the supplier change could turn out to be the fits of jealousy it causes among current Meridian owners.

The amateur-built market has been a crucible for avionics development for decades. The word “experimental” on the airframe often also applies to the panel. It was, after all, a homebuilder who first tried out a loran receiver from a bass boat in his airplane and adapted it for aerial navigation.
A very sore-throated EMS pilot named Mark Graveline, who flies a Bell 206 equipped with the Chelton Flight Systems FlightLogic EFIS for Air Methods of San Antonio, talked about the cockpit system with HAI Convention News at the show yesterday.
Aerosonic Corp. of Clearwater, Fla., has received TSO approval from the FAA for its two-inch standby digital altimeter and airspeed indicators, on display in Booth No. 1217 along with the company’s line of vertical speed and cabin pressure indicators and clocks.
FH1100 Manufacturing Corp. of Century, Fla., has selected an EFIS cockpit from Chelton Flight Systems (Booth No. 2821) as standard equipment on all new 2006 Model FH1100 helicopters. The Chelton FlightLogic system will also be available for retrofit on FH1100 helicopters produced before this year.
The FAA has issued an Airworthiness Directive that mandates replacement of certain Shadin ADC-2000 air-data computers (ADCs) installed in about 450 aircraft, including a handful of Citation 501s, King Airs and Conquests. Effective January 26, the AD was prompted by the discovery of potential errors in some units that could cause them to display incorrect altitude information on their Chelton FlightLogic EFIS displays.
Shadin Avionics of St. Louis Park, Minn., has introduced an LRU that converts existing analog engine information for turboprop and turboshaft aircraft into a digital Arinc 429 format that can be displayed on EFIS avionics in lieu of mechanical instruments.
Autopilot maker S-Tec announced that it is now offering factory installations of its Magic 2100 digital autopilot and single-side EFIS in the King Air 90, Conquest I and Cheyenne I and II. Operators purchasing the autopilot will receive a “free glass cockpit” with no installation fees through the offer from S-Tec and its parent company, Meggitt.
Meggitt subsidiary S-Tec announced last month that the Magic EFIS and Series 2100 autopilot have been approved for installation in the King Air E90.
The cockpit upgrade includes Meggitt’s 4.5- by 5.6-inch LCD flight displays and the Magic 2100 autopilot, a three-axis, digital flight control system that S-Tec developed to bring “jet functionality” to the twin-turboprop market. Installed price for the package is about $120,000.
Universal Avionics and Kansas City Aviation Center have teamed to develop a three-screen LCD upgrade for the Pilatus PC-12. Designed as a replacement for the workhorse turboprop’s Bendix/King EFIS 40 cockpit, the Universal EFI-890R avionics system includes a pair of PFDs and an MFD, each measuring 8.9 inches diagonally.
