Pilots all over the world are probably sick of hearing that “ADS-B is coming,” but the fact is that some countries already require ADS-B capability, and other countries’ deadlines are rapidly approaching. ADS-B equipage needs to remain prominent in pilots’ consciousness because avionics shops need time to certify ADS-B out installations and time to complete the installations. Universal Avionics promoted Paul DeHerrera to the position of CEO. He takes over the role from Joachim “Ted” Naimer, who remains president and chairman of the board at the avionics manufacturer. DeHerrera began his career with Universal Avionics in 1994 as manager of OEM marketing at the company’s Tucson, Ariz. headquarters. He was later elevated to vice president of marketing and product support before being promoted to COO in January 2008.
Jetex Flight Support, in collaboration with Honeywell, launched the MyJETEX iOS app, which allows operators to plan and manage their worldwide trips. Features include flight planning, aircraft datalink, flight following and international trip support services. The collaboration on the new app follows an agreement signed at EBACE whereby Jetex is offering Honeywell’s Global Data Center (GDC) flight support services to its clients in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Universal Avionics will be honoring two hardworking companies with its 2013 International Top Dealer and 2013 North American Top Dealer awards today at 3 p.m. at its NBAA booth (No. N6108).
The Top International Dealer award is going to Scandinavian Avionics for the second year in a row. The company’s work with Universal Avionics’s EFI-890R flight deck retrofits and Precision-Area Navigation (P-RNAV) upgrades were key to earning the award.
Honeywell is highlighting upgrades available to its satcom products, flight management systems (FMS), cabin management systems (CMS) and cockpit displays at this year’s NBAA show.
The company has developed a modification that allows an operator with the “C” series Ovation Select CMS to upgrade the system to full HD video and audio, onboard music, Blu-ray and PlayStation capability. The modification will be offered through the Honeywell dealer network via a supplemental type certificate.
L-3 Aviation Products (Booth No. N4505) announced at the NBAA Convention that Enstrom Helicopter has selected its Trilogy ESI-2000 electronic standby instrument as an option for the Enstrom 480B helicopter.
The Trilogy ESI-2000 provides attitude, altitude, airspeed and optional heading data on a 3.7-inch digital screen. It mirrors the layout of the Enstrom 480B’s primary display, facilitating a quick transition to back-up flight information in an emergency, while reducing weight and saving panel space, L-3 says.
West Star Aviation of East Alton, Ill. is expecting to obtain an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) in the first quarter of 2014 for its RVSM solution for the Cessna Conquest II. The solution includes a dual-side Garmin G600 avionics display system and S-Tec 2100 digital autopilot.
Elliott Aviation is working with Chippewa Aerospace on an STC to upgrade Hawker 800-series jets with the latest Phase V software for Honeywell Primus Epic CDS/R avionics. Elliott will seek its own STC for the NZ-2010 FMS 6.1 version 03040 software upgrade to the Hawker’s NZ-2000 FMS. These STCs will allow operators to fly Waas LPV approaches, although the CDS/R system isn’t required, as Waas LPV is available with the Hawker’s original SPZ-8000 avionics and the NZ-2000 software upgrade.
Columbus, Ohio-based Spirit Avionics has topped $10 million in global aircraft parts sales in less than a year, a 60-percent increase over last year’s sales. The company’s global parts support division distributes, sells and brokers new, overhauled and exchange parts and components through a network of OEMs and vendors. The global parts support division also manages component repairs, rentals, spares acquisition and surplus inventory consignment, and offers Rockwell Collins Casp and Honeywell Happ avionics warranty programs.
The new HeliSure systems introduced by Rockwell Collins aren’t just synthetic-vision systems (SVS) and terrain awareness and warning systems (Taws) for helicopters but “a family of technologies that are going to provide solutions for helicopter cockpits,” said Dan Toy, principal marketing manager for the company’s rotor-wing business. The first products are HSVS and HTaws and will be fitted to new AgustaWestland AW149, AW189, AW101 and AW169 helicopters.
