Regional fractional aircraft provider Executive AirShare received temporary FAA authorization to use the Apple iPad Mini as a Class 1 electronic flight bag (EFB) in its fleet of Learjet 45XRs, Phenom 100s and 300s and King Airs. This authorization is the first step needed to gain full authority for paperless cockpits, which is expected in the first quarter of next year. With the provisional approval, Executive AirShare pilots can perform basic and advanced functions previously performed using paper documents, but flight crews must still carry printed charts as a backup.
Embraer Phenom 100
The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for certain Embraer Phenom 100s. It requires inspection and replacement as necessary of the barrel nuts at the horizontal stabilizer to vertical stabilizer attachment joint.
The Melbourne (Fla.) Airport Authority is expected to approve Embraer Executive Aircraft’s plans for a Legacy 450/500 assembly facility during a special meeting tomorrow morning. Embraer has proposed constructing a $76 million, 250,000-sq-ft building that would be situated between its business jet delivery center and Phenom 100/300 assembly facility on the north side of Melbourne International Airport.
LABACE has provided the first chance for customers to look inside the Embraer Legacy 500, which was granted ANAC approval this week. The aircraft on display is the fourth development aircraft, and was fitted with a full interior for certification purposes.
The Embraer Legacy 500 received type certification from Brazil’s civil aviation agency, Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC), this afternoon during a ceremony at LABACE 2014 in São Paulo, Brazil. The company expects to obtain FAA approval for its clean-sheet, fly-by-wire midsize business jet “in the upcoming weeks” and from EASA “thereafter.”
In the five years since opening its customer Contact Center, Embraer Executive Jets has seen its worldwide fleet grow to a size five times as large as it was back then in 2009. So at a press conference here in São Paulo yesterday, the manufacturer announced it has opened new facilities and expanded the Contact Center to accommodate the growth in customer care needs.
Madrid-based charter operator Suraviation has signed an agreement with Marshall Aviation Services to provide MRO and technical support for Suraviation’s seven Cessna Citations, predominantly Mustangs, plus one CJ2. Marshall has 40 years’ experience with the Citation line and operates FlairJet, a Europe-based charter and management company operating a Cessna Mustang, Excel and Bravo as well as an Embraer Phenom 100 and King Air 350s.
Embraer announced an upgraded version of the Phenom 100 entry-level light jet last year and customers are beginning to take delivery of the new 100E. The aircraft introduces multifunction spoilers and upgraded interior options. Base price is $4.161 million, but options such as premium seats, a solid lavatory door and an extra passenger seat/kibitzer that faces sideways across from the cabin entry door can quickly take the price past $4.4 million, putting it in line with Cessna’s new M2 with a few options.

The company will break ground soon on a major new plant expansion at its Melbourne facility and expects to add 600 more jobs when it is fully up and running. Embraer already assembles Phenom 100s and 300s at the Florida facility. Meanwhile, Embraer Executive Jets senior vice president Jose Eduardo Costas added that certification of the fly-by-wire Legacy 500 is “imminent.”
