Embraer Phenom 100

The FAA on Friday issued a request for comments on special conditions that would apply to Embraer’s Phenom 100 VLJ to cover “novel or unusual design feature(s) associated with aft-mounted engine fire protection.” In the request, the FAA included information about the Phenom 100’s maximum takeoff weight, one of the specifications for the jet that Embraer has not revealed publicly thus far.

Last year Embraer delivered 121 regional jets and 10 Legacy business jets (including two for military service). These figures were slightly lower than projected, the Brazilian manufacturer reported, because of the postponement of the deliveries of three business jets and delayed delivery of two regional jets. Despite the slow economy, Embraer forecasts it will deliver 148 aircraft this year and 155 next year.

JetBird, Europe’s planned new low-cost charter service, has raised €21 million ($31 million) in fresh capital through an oversubscribed private placement of equity to new and existing shareholders. The placement values the company at €101 million ($150 million) as it prepares to receive the first of 50 Embraer Phenom 100 very light jets in time to start operations in April 2009.

Flight Options on November 30 simultaneously announced its finalized acquisition by Miami-based private equity firm HIG Capital and an order for nearly $1 billion worth of Embraer Phenom 300 light jets. In a deal announced in late October, HIG bought the fractional provider from Raytheon for an undisclosed sum. According to an HIG Capital spokesman, there are no management changes planned at Flight Options.

Anyone with even a superficial knowledge of the stratospheric ambitions of the Middle East air transport sector generally, and mind-boggling wealth of the Arabian Gulf states in particular, had expected the 2007 Dubai Airshow to be an epic event. But it is doubtful that anyone outside the top tiers of the region’s airline managements really anticipated the volume of business announced over just five days (November 11 to 15).

We’re now in year two of the great “onslaught” of the very light jet, and soon these small two- and one-engine turbine-powered airplanes will be “darkening the skies” and “clogging up traffic” at airports all over the world, if some predictions are to be believed.

Embraer and Montreal-based training provider CAE announced a joint venture to provide pilot and maintenance training for the Brazilian airframer’s new Phenom 100 very light and Phenom 300 light jets. According to the agreement, CAE will begin initial training for pilots and technicians at its Dallas facility in the third quarter of next year, and at its Burgess Hill, UK center starting in early 2009.
