Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has taken delivery of a Mentor advanced aircraft training device built by Frasca. The trainer will be used in studies of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, in the university’s Normobaric lab. The Mentor replicates a Cessna 172 cockpit complete with Garmin G1000 avionics and a Truvision visual system.

The University of North Dakota (UND) Flying Team won the 2010 Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) national collegiate aviation competition, which was held at Indiana State University-Terre Haute from May 17 to 22. The win marked UND’s 16th SAFECON championship in the 25 years that the university has participated in this competition.

Airports that adopted the voluntary security measures of AOPA’s Airport Watch program saw a steep decline in crime the year after the program’s launch, according to a survey of 122 Pennsylvania noncommercial airports conducted by an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide educator.

Piper Aircraft has announced several leadership changes. President John Becker resigned from the company and was succeeded by Kevin Gould, who retained his title of CEO. Jeff Barger, formerly senior director of manufacturing, has been promoted to v-p of manufacturing operations, while Dr. Dennis Olcott, previously the company’s senior director of engineering, has been named v-p of engineering.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is opening an International Center for Aviation and Wildlife Risk Mitigation at its Prescott, Ariz. campus. The new center will bring together top aviation wildlife experts to share and develop new research and management solutions to reduce the dangers that animals pose to aircraft and serve as a resource to airports around the world.
