The FAA has selected eight additional colleges or universities to participate in the Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) program. Approved colleges and universities in the program prepare and train students interested in a career as an air traffic controller.

The Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust–funded in memory of aviation pioneer Emil Buehler–has pledged $2 million toward building an aviation maintenance science building at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach campus. The 46,000-sq-ft facility, which will be named the Emil Buehler Aviation Maintenance Science building, will serve students enrolled in Embry-Riddle’s Aviation Maintenance Science program.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is adding a center of excellence dedicated to advanced aeronautics and propulsion system research to its College of Engineering in Daytona Beach, Fla. With a $2 million, three-year budget, the center is Embry-Riddle’s contribution to the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP) project.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will be highlighting its new aviation Ph.D. degree program at the NBAA Convention next week. The program will be available online through its Worldwide Campus division, and there will be three available cognates: operations, security and safety, but only operations will be available to students enrolled in the first class in May.

USAIG and NBAA are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their professional development scholarship partnership. The scholarship awards $1,000 to an applicant enrolled full-time in a university offering the NBAA Professional Development Program (PDP).

In Daytona Beach, just 60 miles northeast of the Orange County Convention Center here in Orlando, the NextGen testbed facility at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is playing an important role in advancing air traffic control modernization. It’s a place where the politics of who will pay for ATC modernization can be placed to the side while researchers figure out how to make the various components of NextGen work together.

Next May, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will begin classes for its new aviation Ph.D. degree programs available online through its Worldwide Campus division. According to Embry-Riddle professor of applied aviation studies and aviation program Ph.D. residency coordinator Alan Stolzer, the program is the first of its kind in the world.

ERAM is a replacement for the FAA’s Host computer and is expected to be installed at all 20 U.S. en route centers by 2010.

The Alliance for Sustainable Air Transportation (ASAT) was publicly launched in late June at a summit on global climate change in Miami. The Wakefield, Mass.-based group includes DayJet, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the state of Florida and 11 other members.
