Though unconfirmed by DHL, an unofficial collection of photos and text circulating on the Internet sheds chilling light on the November 22 missile attack at Baghdad International Airport. The Brussels, Belgium-based DHL Airbus A300B4-200 freighter, bound for Bahrain, was hit after takeoff and made a successful emergency landing back at the Baghdad airport with no injury to the three-man Belgian/UK crew.
I have been following some of the discussion about the February flight of a British Airways 747-400 from Los Angeles to London after one of the airplane’s engines failed on takeoff. In addition to statements from the FAA, much has been written about this event, both in the aviation press and on the Internet, particularly among pilots and the academic community.
The pilot and his passenger escaped with minor injuries after their King Air A90 was severely damaged during a crash landing at Ferguson Airport, Pensacola, Fla., on August 17. The turboprop twin, N45TT, was taking off for a post-maintenance test flight when it turned to return to the airport. VMC prevailed.
Bell 206B JetRanger, Patterson, La., March 14, 2006–As the Rotorcraft Leasing JetRanger left Patterson for an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, the helicopter seemed to lose power and “dropped” a couple of times. A passenger reported that the pilot “didn’t have the power to keep it up.” Although the pilot recovered a couple of times, he was attempting an emergency landing when it crashed in trees only five miles from Patterson.

Israel Aircraft Industries 1124 Westwind, Georgetown, Bahamas, May 24, 2006– The Westwind ran off the side of the runway when making an emergency landing at Exuma International Airport. The EMS flight was on an IFR flight plan from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Norfolk, Va., in night visual conditions.
