Airbus set a new record for itself last year by delivering 483 aircraft–30 more than it shipped in 2007, the Toulouse-based company announced today. Last year’s delivery tally for Airbus also beat Boeing’s total by 108 units. The U.S. airframer’s total suffered directly from a two-month strike by machinists that resulted in a decline in deliveries from 441 in 2007 to 375 last year.
Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) Capital plans to acquire ten Boeing 747-8Fs and eight 777Fs from Emirates Airline in a split purchase and leaseback agreement that will increase its lease portfolio to 49 aircraft. DAE Capital has 200 Airbus and Boeing aircraft on order for delivery during 2010-13
For the third day running, Airbus and Boeing defied pessimistic predictions of softening demand for airliners with new contracts collectively worth almost $6 billion.
EADS’s failure to divest itself of major Airbus production sites in both France and Germany as part of its Power8 restructuring plan hasn’t threatened a delay in the development schedule for the A350XWB, according to the European group’s CEO Louis Gallois. However, in the build-up to this week’s Farnborough airshow, questions remained over how long the company could wait before the program begins to lose its development rhythm.
Airbus insists the A350-800XWB will make it to market on time in 2013, despite the company’s failure to close on plant divestments that would have helped pay for $1.5 billion in needed upgrades to key manufacturing sites.
Emirates Airline confirmed yesterday that it will start flying one of its first Airbus A380s nonstop between Dubai and New York JFK Airport on October 1. It claims to not yet know, however, whether or not that flight will actually represent the launch of the airline’s A380 service, as Emirates president Tim Clark continues to mull the possibilities for a still earlier entry elsewhere in a quickly expanding network.
Airbus enjoyed a record year in terms of net orders (including cancellations or order conversions), adding orders for 1,341 airplanes worth $157 million (r107 million) by the end of 2007. The company claims this represents a 30-percent increase on its previous record, set in 2005.
For the better part of a year, Airbus has been referring to the executive version of its A380 as the Flying Palace, so it seemed appropriate that the first customer should be royalty–Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud.
Dubai Aerospace Enterprise made good on a promise to challenge the aerospace industry’s established aircraft leasing giants by committing to orders for 200 new Airbus and Boeing jets worth more than $27 billion.
With a characteristically nimble response to market demand, Emirates Airline hastily re-scheduled an announcement here yesterday of more than $30 billion worth of aircraft orders to accommodate the presence of Dubai ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.
