Airbus will launch the A350 airliner in September regardless of whether the transatlantic trade dispute over airliner subsidies has been settled by then. Airbus chief executive and EADS co-CEO Noël Forgeard yesterday admitted that the company did indeed delay the launch of the A350 to allow the subsidy negotiations between the European Union and the U.S. to advance further.

Two years after signing the deal at the 2003 Dubai airshow, Emirates Airline and General Electric are forging ahead with construction of a huge new engine test facility at Dubai airport. The 6,000-sq-ft, $45 million building, set to open in January 2007, will house an indoor test stand with a data acquisition system and engine “preparation to test” area.
While crewmen work on a United Arab Emirates air force F-16E/F after a demo flight, in the background construction workers are busy erecting a series of new hangars for Emirates’ new Airbus A380s. In addition to the hangars, Dubai International Airport is adding a new terminal and concourses to handle 70 million passengers.
Emirates Airline chairman HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum yesterday announced the largest ever order in the history of the Boeing 777 program. The estimated $9.7 billion contract calls for delivery of 42 airplanes in all–24 GE90-powered B777-300ERs, 10 777-200LRs and eight 777 Freighters. It also grants Emirates “purchase rights” for another twenty 777s.

Etihad Airways will take delivery of its first 777-300ER on January 6, almost three months later than originally planned. The Abu Dhabi-based airline placed an order for five of the airplanes last December, at which time Boeing promised to deliver the first this past October, followed by two each in November and December.
Emirates Airline is constructing a new engineering center, engine test facility and headquarters–all of which it expects to open by January 2007. The $353 million engineering center will sit on a 136-acre site on the north side of Dubai International Airport and rank as one of the biggest civil aviation maintenance facilities in the world.
Exactly 20 years old this past October 25, Emirates Airline expects to continue its prolific growth of the past two decades by taking delivery of an average of one new aircraft a month until 2012, more than doubling its present fleet of 81 airplanes.
