The FAA issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD)—2011-01-53—on December 20 to owners and operators of the Piaggio Avanti twin turboprop. The AD supersedes AD 2011-01-51, issued December 18.

Flight Display Systems has gone Hollywood, in a manner of speaking. To be more specific, the Alpharetta, Ga.-based cabin entertainment specialist ­provided a 42-inch, high-definition, LCD ­widescreen monitor for the recently ­completed Gulfstream III cabin of a Hollywood producer.

Tomorrow night the Montrose County (Colo.) Commission will consider a revised incentive package aimed at luring Extra Aircraft to build an assembly plant there for its all-composite EA-500 turboprop single. The original deal involved a land transfer that required the county to pay Extra $2.2 million for donated land and provide other incentives, essentially capitalizing a large share of the company’s site start-up costs.

The new Raisbeck Engineering Learjet 60 aft fuselage locker made its Labace debut as part of the Bombardier exhibit. The locker’s two compartments provide 25 cu ft of stowage volume outside the cabin and a 300-pound capacity. According to sales manager Tobin Shackelford, the modification does not affect the airplane’s performance. The first factory optional lockers are expected to enter service in next year’s first quarter.

A proposed Airworthiness Directive for Eclipse 500s would require changes to the electronic flight information system and the airplane flight manuals. The proposed 

AD stems from reports of uncommanded changes to the communications radio frequency, altitude preselect and/or transponder codes. The FAA said the AD would “correct faulty integration of hardware and software” on Eclipses.

NBAA announced that Arnold Palmer, the legendary golfer and esteemed businessman who serves as a voice for the “No Plane, No Gain” advocacy campaign, will receive the 2010 NBAA Meritorious Service to Aviation Award. Meanwhile, business pilot Chuck McKinnon will be given the 2010 NBAA John P. “Jack” Doswell Award. Both will receive their awards at the 2010 NBAA Convention.
