For those who just don’t want the airshow ever to end, there is the official Farnborough 2008 DVD, which is being filmed here all week by LifeTV Media. With multiple camera angles (including in-cockpit cameras), the DVD offers comprehensive coverage of the daily flying displays as well as special features on topics such as the Centenary of British Flight and interviews with pilots.

Imagine being a new aircraft manufacturer and having Gene Cernan and Bob Hoover check out your airplane in one day. It happened yesterday to Jim McCotter, president and CEO of Maverick Jets, at the Maverick booth (No. 3915) when the astronaut and the aerobatic pilot each tried out the pilot’s seat of the mockup of the sleek personal jet (there’s an airplane at Static Display No. 21, also).

USAIG (Booth No. 2621) and its managers, United States Aviation Underwriters, this week announced the start of a year-long celebration of the company’s 75th anniversary. The New York-based company was launched in 1928 and has insured such well-known personalities as Lieutenant James (Jimmy) Dolittle’s first instrument flight and such tragedies as the crash of the airship Hindenburg.

NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) have denounced a report on private jet travel and the general aviation industry issued by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and Essential Action (EA), two left-leaning Washington think tanks. In short, the report echoes the airline industry’s claim that GA does not pay its fair share of ATC costs and is the cause of airport congestion.

The airborne products division of Teac announced the availability of new “plug and play” digital file servers for use with the company’s in-flight entertainment systems.  The AE-1600SS digital audio server and VE-801SS video server can store and replay up to four times the digital content of tape-based units, Teac claimed.

The GE T58-powered Maverick TwinJet is available only as a kit, but now McCotter Aviation, which purchased 90 percent of Penrose, Colo.-based Maverick Air in March, plans to develop a certified production airplane based on the Maverick dubbed the MC 2400. James McCotter, a Beaver Creek, Colo. businessman with interests in media and real estate, is president and principal owner of McCotter Aviation.

Operators of about 1,100 Honeywell TFE731-2, -3 and -4 engines have until December 31 next year to replace fan rotor discs with improved ones under a new Airworthiness Directive (2001-23-09). The AD supersedes two previous directives that required the removal of certain older discs and established life limits on that disc series. Estimated cost for parts is $20,400 per engine.

A voice-capable, three-frequency ELT made by the UK’s HT Smith Group is now being marketed in North America by Winslow Life Raft of Lake Suzy, Fla. The 1.3-lb ELT has two-way voice transmission capability on 121 MHz and 243 MHz. The $2,975 unit also sends distress signals on 406 MHz.
