Twelve aircraft, including five commercial and several corporate jets, were damaged during a severe thunderstorm that ripped through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on July 14, ushering in the Arizona monsoon season and shutting down the airport for three hours. The north runway remained closed until noon the next day.
BEECHJET 400, CLEVELAND, OHIO, MAY 8, 2002–Birds substantially damaged a Beechjet 400 operated by Georgia Jet while departing from the Burke Lakefront Airport (BKL). The ATP-certified pilots taxied out to depart Runway 6L. While taxiing, they saw a flock of birds sitting on the approach end of the runway. ATC cleared the Beechjet for takeoff and the crew taxied into position.
Embraer is launching a voluntary carbon offset program for its Embraer Executive Care (EEC) customers later this year, according to director of environmental strategies and technologies Graciliano Campos. The EEC program allows customers to purchase coverage for maintenance and parts, and an additional option will allow them to purchase carbon credits to offset aircraft emissions.
The FAA will procure new radar systems for some 15 low- to medium-activity airports that currently have no radar displays. These displays are part of the agency’s plan to provide interim tower displays in advance of the full national deployment of the Standard Terminal Automated Radar System (Stars). The displays will provide an “affordable and certifiable” tower radar that can be purchased by airports at their own expense.
Toyota confirmed that the fuselage of its experimental four-seat piston aircraft is a one-piece co-cured (single-molded) unit of a carbon fiber and resin composite material. The aircraft flew for the first time at Mojave (Calif.) Airport on May 31.
