Bell Helicopter has tapped Honeywell to provide the auxiliary power unit (APU) and environmental control system for the new Bell 525 Relentless, which is scheduled to start flying next year. The Honeywell RE100 APU selected for the super-medium twin helicopter is lighter and more fuel efficient than competing systems, according to Honeywell. Honeywell’s AC-5510 environmental control system will provide heating and air-conditioning for the 16-passenger helicopter.

Boeing delivered the first 737NG powered by CFM56-7BE turbofans–a 737-800–to China Southern Airlines at Boeing Field in Seattle last week. The new engines, now standard on all new 737s, includes improvements to the high-pressure compressor, a new outlet-guide-vane diffuser, fewer high-pressure-turbine blades and an “optimized” low-pressure turbine.
Hamilton Sundstrand’s Power Systems business has successfully completed ETOPS (extended-range operations) testing of its APS5000 auxiliary power unit (APU) for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
BAE Systems and Quest International of the UK have combined to launch a cabin air system that they say can destroy airborne viruses and bacteria, including H1N1 (swine flu), SARS, bird flu and eColi. AirManager has been flight-tested on BAE 146/ Avro RJ regional airliners operated by five European carriers, and one undisclosed carrier has selected it for its fleet.
Honeywell has been chosen by Embraer to provide the air-conditioning and temperature-control system for the Brazilian manufacturer’s Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 executive jets. The Legacy’s air- conditioning system will use bleed air from either the Honeywell 36-150 auxiliary power unit or the Honeywell HTF7000 engines to cool the cabin. According to Honeywell, the AC-5000 series of environmental control systems deliver high reliability.
