Eurocopter’s EC 145 light twin-engine helicopter has received a makeover in the form of the Stylence (a play on “style” and “silence”) interior upgrade. The refreshed model, featuring sleek, red-leather seating, is on public display for the first time here at the Eurocopter booth (No. 7015).
Defense business accounts for nearly half the turnover of Eurocopter, and recent export orders should help the EADS subsidiary overcome a downturn in commercial orders. Over the past two months, a major deal to supply 50 EC 725 Cougars to Brazil has been announced, followed by 15 more to Greece for SAR duties.
It’s been a busy month for Sikorsky’s S-92 development team as the project moves toward approval by year-end. The big twin scored its first public-use sale from the Irish Air Corps, good news that was nevertheless scarred by controversy, specifically Eurocopter’s initiation of legal proceedings against both Sikorsky and the Irish government alleging improper practices on the part of both.
Eurocopter now targets late next year as the new certification date for the EC 225. A derivative of the Super Puma, the new medium twin helicopter was originally set to be certified late this year. Major cockpit and autopilot design changes after the program started have lengthened the program by six months.
Eurocopter AS 355/EC 130, New York, March 22, 2008–A Liberty Helicopter Eurocopter AS 355 struck an idling Liberty Eurocopter EC 130 on takeoff from the West 30th Street Heliport. The AS 355’s skid hit the main rotor of the stationary EC 130. The recently EASA-certified Eurocopter EC 225 Super Puma has a new anti-vibration system that brings more performance, simplicity and lightness to the helicopter. Othertechnological innovations on themedium-twin helicopter include a new autopilot–with an engine-failure mode–and a new cockpit, which the company describes as providing a more intuitive man-machine interface.
The first production Eurocopter EC 225 medium twin made its maiden flight in late June. Eurocopter said the “flawless” event lasted just over two hours. The EC 225 is powered by two Turbomeca Makila 2A modular turboshafts, an engine that has just been certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Each of the powerplants generates 2,413 shp in contingency mode–14 percent more than the previous model.
The air-medical market just keeps on reaping benefits for the world’s No. 1 producer of civil helicopters.
Design engineers from Eurocopter and the Harbin Aircraft subsidiary of China’s Avic II group gathered on January 9 at Marignane in the south of France to open the common design office for the EC 175 helicopter program. The joint program, evenly shared between the Europeans and Chinese, calls for certification and entry into service in 2011. However, so far details about the twin-turbine, seven-ton-class rotorcraft are scarce.
