F-104 Starfighter

Each year, NBAA recognizes the top aviation maintenance and avionics technicians with good safety records who work for member companies. Maintaining corporate aircraft or avionics for three accident-free years is the minimum requirement for an NBAA Safety Award but the actual number of years for many of the top technicians adds up to four decades or more.

Tom Macdonald, the Osprey V-22 chief test pilot, received the Iven C. Kincheloe Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. The award, established in memory of Kincheloe, who died in 1958 in the course of flight-testing an F-104 Starfighter, is presented annually for outstanding flight-test accomplishments.

Asymmetric-thrust accidents continue to occur in normal operations and in training because of “a huge misunderstanding” about how best to retain control of multi-engine aircraft, said a Dutch former test pilot concerned that flight manuals do not reflect definitions of performance used in certification.
