The 58th Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) safety seminar for business aviation was held in Montreal last month under a new name. What has long been known as CASS (corporate aviation safety seminar) is now called BASS (business aviation safety seminar), “to align us better with the business aviation community, which comprises 60 percent of the foundation’s membership,” according to FSF CEO Kevin Hiatt.
An RAA-sponsored study into the fatigue effects of multi-segment flight operations has reached the end of its third and final stage, involving the development of so-called fatigue risk management systems (FRMS).

Eurocopter says it has made significant progress in solving the main gearbox issue that has blighted the EC225 medium twin since last May, reporting that a third test campaign at its headquarters in Marignane, France “is establishing” the cause of crack initiation.
Eurocopter attributes the issue to “a combination of factors” leading to a degradation of the vertical shaft’s fatigue resistance. The helicopter manufacturer has excluded any “abnormal dynamic overload.” Failure of the bevel gear shaft causes a loss of lubrication.
Jeppesen introduced an improved version of its CrewAlert mobile app that helps aircraft crewmembers deal with fatigue risk management. The updated app can instantly calculate a strategy from up to 900,000 sleep patterns and light exposure combinations to increase crew alertness and overall flight safety. It also contains built-in scientific mitigation strategies automatically calculated to fit to the roster and individual settings such as individual sleep requirements and commute times, among others.
The North Texas Business Aviation Association will offer 10 different safety presentations at its first Safety Show Down event on April 3 at the Dallas-area Addison Airport (ADS). The event takes place at Million Air’s location on the northeast side of the field beginning with check-in at 7:30 a.m. Session topics include pilot upset recovery, food safety and fatigue.

The University of Southern California Aviation Safety and Security program within the Viterbi School of Engineering is offering a human factors in aviation maintenance class designed to provide knowledge and understanding of human factors in the realm of aviation safety focusing on the role of the aviation maintainer. The class will run from April 26 to April 29.
The FAA is proposing to supersede an existing airworthiness directive for the Agusta A109E that requires reducing the tail rotor (T/R) blade life limit, modifying a T/R hub and grip assembly, re-identifying two T/R assemblies, clarifying the never-exceed speed (Vne) limitation and reducing the inspection interval. The OEM has since redesigned a T/R grip bushing that reduces the loads, which caused cracking on the T/R blades.
The Walk Out for Safety protest organized by the European Cockpit Association (ECA) was supported by 2,500 to 3,000 pilots and cabin crew across 26 different countries on January 22. The event was intended to express opposition to changes to commercial flight- and duty-time rules proposed by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
