Raytheon Beech King Air 100, Pawtucket, R.I., Aug. 13, 2006–The NTSB said that the cause of the gear-collapse accident was the pilot’s misjudging distance and speed during final approach, which resulted in an undershoot and subsequent gear collapse. The 3,374-hour commercial pilot said that while landing on Runway 33 with a seven-knot wind at 300 degrees, the right main gear touched down about two feet before the runway.
FedEx Flight 647
The NTSB blamed the first officer’s poor techniques for the Dec. 18, 2003, crash of a FedEx Boeing MD-10-10F in Memphis, Tenn. The Safety Board attributed the crash to “the first officer’s failure to properly apply crosswind landing techniques to align the airplane with the runway centerline and to properly arrest the airplane’s descent rate before touchdown.
Gulfstream American Twin Commander 690C, Indianapolis, Feb. 10, 2005–The airplane was substantially damaged, but the occupants uninjured, during a runway excursion while landing on Runway 21 at Eagle Creek Airport. There was a direct right crosswind of approximately 13 knots. The pilot reported that the landing was normal, on centerline, and that touchdown was at the 1,000-foot runway markings.
