Airlines are starting to count the financial cost of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated large areas of northeastern Japan on March 11. The International Air Transport Association has warned of a “major slowdown” for airlines operating in the Japanese market and says that this is unlikely to recover before the second half of 2011.
ATR turboprop aircraft maintenance is being developed in Finland as a result of
a joint venture by Finnair and Finncomm Airlines. The company, Finnish Aircraft Maintenance, will be located in the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport area, with operations slated to begin by year-end.
A firm order for three 100-seat Embraer E190s from Finnair capped a brisk run of sales activity in the second half of February for the Brazilian airframe builder. The deal raises to 23 the number of E-Jets ordered by the Finnish flag carrier, which took delivery of its seventh E190 last month. It also flies ten 72-seat Embraer E170s.
The newly established leasing arm of Finnish flag carrier Finnair last month placed a firm order for 12 Embraer 170 regional jets as part of a deal worth more than $300 million that calls for first delivery of the 76-seat airplanes by the fall of next year. The contract, signed by Finnair Aircraft Finance, includes options for another eight Embraer 175s and/or 190s, raising the potential value of the deal to $510 million.
Could Embraer have become the first voice in aviation to commit to the notion that passengers aren’t necessarily all enthralled with the “no frills” concept of air travel and that they may be prepared to pay a little bit extra to feel less like self-loading cargo?
Finnair is a CFM customer with a very real but little-known success story, which is contributing in a major way to more efficient travel. Over the past few years, the Nordic carrier has found that demand has surged for services from smaller European cities to Asia via Helsinki, as Internet booking engines and computer reservation systems place it at the top of search results for routes to Asia.
Avions de Transport Regional yesterday landed the first pair of three orders it plans to announce this week at the show, when Finnish regional airline Finncomm signed for eight 48-seat ATR 42-500s and New Caledonia’s Air Caledonie inked a deal for a still undefined mix of three ATR 42-500s and ATR 72-500s.
Circumstances have certainly done few favors for the 2005 ERA General Assembly’s hometown airline. From its first day of operation, Gothenburg-based City Airline seemed marked for failure. It flew its first revenue service four years ago, on Sept. 10, 2001, the day before the U.S. terrorist attacks that accelerated the global economic recession already under way.
A chill in the air and an unseasonably hard rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm last month in São José dos Campos, Brazil, as U.S. carrier JetBlue accepted delivery of Embraer’s first 190 twinjet.
The ceremonies in the Embraer hangar opened with an amateur musical video performance by members of the Embraer team responsible for designing and building the 100-passenger airliner.
Air Canada became the first North American airline to take delivery of two different models of Embraer’s new E-Jet series, when on December 12 its first 93-seat Embraer 190 arrived at its Montreal base. By then the airline had already taken delivery of 13 of 15 Embraer 175s, the last of which it expects this month. All told, it has placed firm orders for 60 E-Jets, including 45 Embraer 190s.
