Boeing has completed major assembly of the first set of wings for the 747-8 Freighter, the company announced today. The 135-foot, 3-inch wings–thicker and wider than those they replace on the 747-400–incorporate new aerodynamics and allowances for different pressure distribution and bending moments.

Embraer is paying for a service bulletin to replace flap-controller units in the first 10 to 20 Phenom 100 very light jets. The new controller units will have updated software to fix a “nuisance failure” problem that causes the flaps not to work. “The failure does not actually exist,” explained Embraer’s Mauricio Martins de Almeida Filho, “but the system interprets it as a ‘flap fail’ condition and triggers a fail-safe shutdown.

The Air Moorea DHC-6-300 Twin Otter turboprop that crashed near Moorea Island on Aug. 9, 2007, took off with an almost failed pitch-control cable, due to recent exposure to jet blast, according to French Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) chief Paul-Louis Arslanian. Other causes include the omission of cable inspections and the use of stainless-steel cables, which are more prone to wear.

A Spanish judge will question two Spanair maintenance technicians and their chief about the MD-82 crash that killed 154 people and wounded another 18 on August 20 at Madrid Barajas Airport in Spain. The three Spanair employees may be subsequently charged with manslaughter and injuries through negligence.

Lynnwood, Wash.-based Eldec Corp. is gauging interest among bizav operators in its new flap skew detection system developed for the Canadair Regional Jet. Used to monitor aircraft flap actuation systems and provide control output before a flap skew condition arises, the system has proven more reliable than RVDTs (rotary variable displacement tranducers) and resolvers, claims Eldec.

SCHEMPP-HIRTH NIMBUS 4DM, MINDEN, NEV., JULY 13, 1999– The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its final report on the crash of a Schempp-Hirth Nimbus 4DM glider that killed former FAA Administrator Donald Engen and friend Bill Ivans, who owned the powered glider. It is believed that Engen was sitting in the passenger seat behind Ivans, who would have been flying the aircraft.

The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) last month issued a sweeping recommendation that the EASA, FAA, Transport Canada and other aviation agencies amend requirements for the design and installation of electronic components in aircraft so that fluid and moisture contamination, as a source of common cause failures, is specifically taken into account.

Owners of some 360 U.S.-registered Mitsubishi MU-2Bs won’t be required to install newly designed flap torque-tube joints, as proposed last September. Operators have been required to perform repetitive inspections of the joints under an AD issued in 1988, and the FAA found that there have been no service difficulty reports indicating cracks in joints for current design parts since that directive.

LOCKHEED 1329-23E JETSTAR, HOUSTON, TEXAS, MAY 15, 2004–JetStar N57NR sustained minor damage when the left flap assembly detached while the airplane was on approach to Hobby Airport. The airplane was operated by Aircraft Trading Center of Tequesta, Fla. The two ATP pilots and two passengers were not injured.
