Although the outcome of US Airways Flight 1549 could not have been much better, the accident nevertheless prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to issue 33 recommendations to U.S. and European aviation authorities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Buckle up for safety! The long-running ad campaign that got us all to wear our seat belts when driving is just as relevant to airplanes as cars, and children as well as adults. DOT-mandated driving laws require young children to be not only restrained by seat belts but also ensconced in approved car seats.
Airbus is here displaying an ACJ business jet (tail number G-NOAH) that recently started commercial operations with Farnborough, UK-based Acropolis Aviation. The bizliner’s luxurious 19-passenger cabin features lounges, a bedroom and a bathroom with a substantial shower. Acropolis Aviation is chartering G-NOAH for $15,000 to $18,000 per hour, depending on the length of the trip.
There are no petri dishes where we could grow a perfect strain of safety culture and inject it into those aviation organizations that clearly seem to need it. Come to think of it, all airlines and repair stations could use a booster shot of safety culture to keep their organizations fighting the constant pressures to move aircraft and save money, often by cutting corners.
Republic Airways plans to ground the last of nine remaining Boeing 717s it acquired with its purchase of Milwaukee-based Midwest Airlines by November 3 and replace them with Embraer E190s flown by “non-legacy” pilots. At press time Midwest’s ALPA-represented pilots and the Teamsters-represented pilots at Republic failed to reach a deal to merge their seniority lists, leaving the last 68 Midwest pilots out of work.
The pilots of the Northwest Airlines Flight 188 that overflew Minneapolis on October 21 told NTSB investigators that a distraction in the cockpit of their Airbus A320 led to the incident, not a “heated discussion,” as reported by the Safety Board last Thursday.
Women in Corporate Aviation, International (WCA) has announced that Rachael Denise Thomas is the recipient of its 2009 WCA Career Scholarship. The award is to be presented during the WCA Networking Reception today. Along with the WCA Scholarship, Thomas will also receive a one-year membership in the WCA. She earned her private pilot certificate in 2001 and has worked to gain additional certificates and ratings.

On Tuesday, the NTSB opened a three-day hearing to focus on the January 15 ditching on New York’s Hudson River by an Airbus A320 operating as US Airways flight 1549 from La Guardia Airport. All 150 passengers and five crew escaped, though one flight attendant and four passengers were seriously injured.
Two veteran American Airlines pilots, who in the words of the NTSB were “not having a good day,” nevertheless used “some exceptional stick-and-rudder skills” to get their crippled MD-82 safely back to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) after experiencing an in-flight engine fire during the airliner’s departure climb on Sept. 28, 2007.
