Smiths Aerospace, the supplier of flight management systems on the Boeing Business Jet, is poised to become a subsidiary of General Electric after the Smiths Group agreed last month to sell its aviation unit for $4.8 billion. The deal faces scrutiny from U.S. and European regulators, but it is widely expected to close within a few months.

Landmark Aviation last month received STC approval to install Rockwell Collins’ Pro Line 21 IDS integrated display system in the Falcon 50. Developed as a replacement for older analog instrumentation, the screen swap brings added capabilities to the airplane for display of graphical weather, electronic charts and maps and flight management system overlays.

The U.S. Navy has selected the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics system for its fleet of 55 T-44A trainers in a major upgrade program anticipated to last four years. Under terms of the deal, Arinc will serve as the purchasing and installation agency for the program and L-3 Communications the prime contractor. The T-44A is the military version of the Beech King Air twin turboprop.

The company is also announcing new contracts here at the Paris Air Show. In Russia, CMC has won a contract to provide Moscow-based Transaero Airlines with its GPS-based flight management system (FMS), the CMA-900. The deal covers five Boeing 747s. Deliveries should take place between May 2005 and early 2006.

CMC Electronics has completed the  avionics systems integration of the cockpit upgrade for the Dubai  Air Wing’s L100-30 Hercules, one of which is on static display here. The operator has also selected CMC’s PilotView electronic flight bag (EFB) for installation on its L100.

Premier/West Star announced the completion of its first installation of the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics system in a Falcon 50. The package includes a new digital autopilot, dual AHRS sensors, weather radar and radio stack.

New contracts for Canada’s CMC Electronics (A1010) will see the company’s CMA2082F avionics management system supplied for the German air force’s Tornado mid-life improvement program and its CMA2082MH aircraft management systems installed on the Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclone helicopters for the Canadian Forces.

In the ARJ21 Rockwell Collins has found the first regional jet application for its ProLine 21 avionics suite. Chinese airframer ACAC specifically selected the package because it wants the new model to boast flight deck commonality with larger airliners. The U.S. avionics house is now testing the kit in its ARJ21 configurations and expects to complete integration of the first version of this by year end.
