China’s Xi’an Aviation Science and Technology Company (XASC) has awarded Rockwell Collins a contract to develop a simulation and training program for the Xi’an Aircraft (XAC) MA-60 and MA-600 regional turboprops. Under the terms of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will use its CORE simulation architecture to supply key components of the MA-60 full-flight simulator and the MA-600 training device.

“Everything we do at Collins we do for a strategic reason,” said Kent Statler, executive vice president, Rockwell Collins Services, speaking of the avionics major’s strengthening foray into the simulation and training market.
As part of the launch of its “new reality” simulator and services portfolio, Thales assembled a high-level panel of simulation and training industry professionals to discuss the challenges facing their industry as a result of falling margins, increasing overhead and more aggressive competition.
Forty of FlightSafety International’s full flight simulators located at 15 learning centers in North America have been qualified under the EASA flight simulator training device catch-up process. The process was developed to qualify simulators located outside of EASA member states’ jurisdiction so they can continue to be used in the training of European-licensed flight crews under EASA regulations.
Eurocopter (Booth No. 7010) and Thales will design and build the first-ever simulator for the medium-weight, twin-engine Dauphin AS 365 N3 helicopter for Héli-Union of France. Expected to be operational beginning in 2011 at Héli-Union’s training center in Angoulême, the simulator has the support of Angoulême’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).
American Eurocopter has signed the first long-term commercial customer for the full-motion EC 135/EC 145 training device at its Grand Prairie, Texas campus. Stat MedEvac will use the simulator to train EC 135 and EC 145 air medical service crews operating in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and the District of Columbia. The U.S. Army began using the simulator last December to train crews for the UH-72A Lakota, an EC 145 variant.
A proposed rule that calls for a sweeping overhaul of flight crew and dispatcher training has certainly piqued the interest of RAA vice president of technical affairs Dave Lotterer, but for all the wrong reasons.
Eurocopter is offering an EC 135 helicopter flight simulator at its training facility in Donauwörth, Germany. The simulator features a full-motion system with six degrees of freedom. It can display daylight, twilight and night conditions as well as any weather situation, according to the helicopter maker. Its mission spectrum includes rescue operations in snowy mountains.
Emphasizing Metro Aviation’s “zeal for safety,” the Shreveport, La.-based company announced at Heli-Expo’09 yesterday that FlightSafety International received FAA approval on Friday for an EC 135/145 level-7 flight simulator that Metro Aviation and FSI jointly developed. The new simulator is expected to go into service this September at FSI’s facility in Lafayette, La.
Simulator manufacturer Frasca International’s current projects include two full-flight simulators for Bristow Helicopters (a Sikorsky S-92 and a Eurocopter EC 225) and three level-7 helicopter flight-training devices for FlightSafety International (an AS 350 B2, a Bell 206B/206L and a Bell 407). “The helicopter training sector has become a very important market for Frasca,” said John Frasca, vice president.
