American Eurocopter (AEC) has received FAA Level B and night-vision goggle (NVG) training certification for its AS350 full flight simulator in Grand Prairie, Texas. And yesterday, AEC announced that it signed a simulator training contract with the Texas Department of Public Safety, covering dry lease of the AS350 simulator. This will allow the department’s instructors to train DPS pilots.
In the “near future,” FlightSafety (Booth No. 5106) will be adding Pratt & Whitney Canada turboshaft engine training to centers in Curitiba, Brazil; Johannesburg, South Africa; Melbourne, Australia; and Beijing, China. The company currently offers training for the PT6B, PT6C, PT6T and PW206/207 at centers in Dallas/Fort Worth, Wichita, West Palm Beach, Montreal, Toronto, Paris Le Bourget and Singapore.
If there is a symbol of success, Matt Jennings’ smile was it yesterday as he presented a briefing at Heli-Expo 2011on the Royal Aeronautical Society’s successful development of new criteria for the classification of civil helicopter flight simulation training devices (FSTDs) and announced that it is now in the hands of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
CAE’s new 3000-series helicopter simulator brings an extraordinary amount of realism into what is essentially a computer-driven replica of a Eurocopter AS350B2 cockpit capable of simulating a variety of real-world training experiences. With the Tropos-6000 visual display projecting the view outside the cockpit onto screens that wrap around the cockpit’s chin windows, flying the simulator seems extremely close to a real helicopter.
Emirates-CAE Flight Training (ECFT) has announced the addition of a full-flight simulator (FFS) for the Bombardier Challenger 604 to its training center, located here in Dubai. The CAE-7000 Series level D FFS will join a fleet of sims replicating the flight characteristics of more than a score of business jets, and is expected to be ready for training in the first half of 2012.
FlightSafety International (Booth No. 1227 and 1327) is marking a year of advances at NBAA, capped by the recent completion of construction of the first Gulfstream G650 flight simulator.
Urbana, Ill.-based simulator manufacturer Frasca International (Booth No. 1839) has received an order from Purdue University for an Embraer Phenom FAA level-6 flight training device (FTD). It will include the same Garmin Prodigy avionics found in the aircraft and will be used in the university’s professional pilot training program.
CAE’s expansion strategy is paying off. The Saint-Laurent, Quebec-based company (Booth No. 6903) has grown rapidly since it was founded in 1947 and now operates training facilities on six continents. It also offers enhanced services using technology tools to deliver training not only to aviation customers but also to the healthcare, mining/heavy equipment and energy industries.
Eurocopter and Thales have agreed to install a full-flight simulator for the Dauphin AS365 N3 at Eurocopter’s Singapore facilities by mid-2012. The company expects to operate the simulator 3,500 hours per year, on the strength of the 170 AS365 N3s flown by 700 pilots in the Asia-Pacific region. The cockpit uses an “advanced reconfigurable concept,” which enables modifying the cockpit for different missions in four hours.
Just when we might have thought that flight simulators are about as “leading edge” as they can get, it turns out that the engineers have been busy developing new concepts.
