The number of training programs preparing flight crew for the new multi-crew pilot license (MPL) continues to multiply. Before year-end, there will likely be 30 or more active MPL programs around the world with well over 3,000 cadets in the pipeline. The MPL is intended as a competency-based training license focused on preparing new pilots to become airline first officers.
CAE signed an agreement with African-based Caverton Helicopters to provide training center operation services over a six-year period. The facility will be located in Lagos, Nigeria, and is scheduled to open in the middle of next year. CAE will provide “turnkey solutions” that include the start-up, maintenance and operation of the six-simulator-bay training center. When opened, the center will have AgustaWestland AW139 and Boeing 737NG full-motion simulators and two CAE Simfinity Integrated Procedures Trainers (IPTs).
FlightSafety International cut the ribbon on the major expansion and renovation project at its Teterboro, N.J learning center yesterday. The expansion increased floor space by 50 percent and refurbished the entire facility, including a new lobby area and café.
Until recently, the sharing economy enabled by modern technology has been limited to industries less regulated than aviation such as taxicabs (Uber, Lyft, Sidecar), hotels (Airbnb) and cars (RelayRides). But now the sharing economy is coming to general aviation, in the form of new ways to rent airplanes (OpenAirplane) and systems for sharing expenses and empty seats in Part 91 non-commercial aircraft (AirPooler and Flytenow).

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based helicopter operator Infinity Support Services (ISS) signed an agreement with FlightSafety International to design, manufacture and support a full-motion Sikorsky S-92 flight simulator and other training devices for its ISS Aviation Academy. This will be the first S-92 simulator installed in the Middle East when it enters service by year-end. In addition, FlightSafety will provide ISS with training programs, courseware and manuals, as well as operate the level-D S-92 simulator.
FlightSafety International continued its non-U.S. expansion in the helicopter training market, signing an agreement at EBACE on Wednesday with Infinity Support Services (ISS). The contract calls for FlightSafety to deliver a Level D flight simulation training device (FSTD) for the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter to the new ISS Aviation Academy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This will be FlightSafety’s first helicopter FSTD in the Middle East and follows recent announcements of S-92 devices for Stavanger, Norway and São Paulo, Brazil.
A partnership between FlightSafety International (FSI) and Gulfstream has created two new science-based flight crew training courses. One focuses on rejected takeoffs, while the second course reviews the physics of energy management during the aircraft descent. A third new training option uses a custom methodology to present critical aircraft procedures and tasks according to the phase of flight rather than the traditional class that introduces everything tied to a particular aircraft system.
CAE is preparing to open a fourth training center for Embraer’s Phenom light jets later this year. According to Carlos Mallaco, vice president for Customer Support & Services with Embraer Executive Jets, the additional training capacity will likely be added in the U.S. through the long-established Embraer CAE Training Services (ECTS) joint venture. Phenom pilots already have three ECTS facilities at their disposal in Dallas, Texas; Burgess Hill in the UK; and São Paulo in Brazil.
