Construction is under way to build a larger south east-west parallel runway at Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL). The $791 million project is slated for completion in 2014 and will allow the airport to increase flight operations capacity by 50 percent, to more than 480,000 a year.
GA Telesis has expanded its service offerings to include component support solutions for defense and government applications. The new operation will have its principal headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The company specializes in commercial aircraft and jet engine leasing, component maintenance as well as maintaining a comprehensive and independent replacement aerospace component inventory network.
This year aviation companies, even airlines, are resuming hiring, and that alone may explain the new attendance record set by the annual Women in Aviation International Conference, held in Dallas from March 8 to 10. It might be difficult to believe that in 2012 women still need to band together to help each other find jobs in the aviation and aerospace industries.
Lockheed Martin has described progress in the F-35 development program, and solutions to some of the problems that have recently been identified. Having exceeded the planned flight-test sorties and test points in 2011 by 15 percent, the company is hoping for similar gains this year. Of the 59,585 test points scheduled for the development phase through 2016, just over one-fifth had been flown by the end of December.
Construction began at the end of January on a runway expansion project at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport with a price tag of nearly $800 million. The work will shift and lengthen Runway 9R/27L from its current 5,276 feet to 8,000 feet, giving the rapidly growing airport two parallel runways that can accommodate airline flights. The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s capacity from 84 flights per hour to more than 100.
Lakeland, Fla.-based Gulf Coast Avionics has entered into a marketing and sales partnership with Platinum Aviation in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. Under the agreement, Gulf Coast Avionics will be the exclusive supplier of avionics sales, service and installation and pilot supply products to Platinum Aviation.
GippsAero appointed Tallahassee, Fla.-based Flightline Group as its authorized dealer for the Southeast U.S. last Thursday. The Australian-based manufacturer, which is owned by Mahindra Aerospace of Mumbai, India, currently produces the GA8 Airvan utility aircraft and it is developing the 10-seat GA10 turboprop single. Flightline Group is also the authorized dealer for Piper in the Southeast and for Honda Aircraft in the Southeast and Northeast.

Moscow Sheremetievo Airport’s newly built Terminal A–a dedicated business jet facility operated by Avia-Group–is now open, airport general manager Mikhail Vasilenko said this week. This completes the airport’s major reconstruction effort launched in the late 1990s.
According to Vasilenko, Terminal A was built to “high” international standards to secure Sheremetievo as “the best of the premium segment in the business aviation market.”
Emerald Coast Aviation has closed its doors at Destin Airport approximately nine months after the MRO subleased services for Miracle Strip Aviation. Emerald Coast offered maintenance and flight instruction for Miracle Strip. Emerald Coast continues to maintain an FBO at Crestview, Florida’s Bob Sikes Airport and also provides fueling service at Northwest Florida Regional Airport. Jonathon Dunn, president of Emerald Coast Aviation, declined to comment.
