Chemical giant BASF is claiming its Basotect open-celled melamine foam is both improving sound insulation and saving weight in the Russian Helicopters Mi-8. Used for an executive cabin refurbishing, it has cut interior noise from 85 to 80 dB. It has also saved 530 pounds, compared with the previous insulation arrangement. The special foam is affixed to “selected noise-intensive points,” at a thickness of 40 mm.

Simplex Aerospace is adapting its third-generation Aerial Cleaning System (ACS) into an aerial firefighting system for high-rise buildings. Ground-based firefighting equipment can reach only the first 11 floors of a high-rise, leaving an obvious gap in the ability to contain fires in higher up floors, Simplex vice president of sales and marketing Larry Lichtenberger told AIN today at Heli-Expo.
Plans to adapt explosion-suppressant foam (ESF) to business jets has been indefinitely delayed. Engineering Inerting Systems of Ramsey, N.J., a joint venture between Aircraft Services Group and ESF provider Crest Foam Industries, said in January it was aiming to obtain the initial STC for the Boeing Business Jet in about six months (AIN, February, page 32).
