A November airline takeoff incident in South Africa, reportedly involving foreign object damage (FOD), has attracted the attention of aviation safety officials worldwide and could be of concern to corporate operators of aircraft with powerful low-slung engines, such as the Boeing BBJ and 757/767 and the Airbus ACJ.
Foreign object damage
Foreign object damage could one day disappear, thanks to technology developed in the UK. A high-precision millimeter wave radar built by researchers at QinetiQ (pronounced ki•ne•tic) has demonstrated its ability to detect objects as small as a two-inch-long steel machine bolt as it lay on a runway surface 1.24 miles from the radar.
Banking and oil heir Michael Huffington, who is suing Bombardier over a Global Express he first ordered in 1995 and later rejected after he learned the aircraft had been struck by lightning, has produced a consultant’s report hoping to bolster his lawsuit against Bombardier. That report claims that the GEX is far more likely to be hit by lightning and suffer serious damage than its competitors. Bombardier disputes the report.
Aiming to improve turbulence detection
FDC/aerofilter has obtained FAA approval for unrestricted flight in falling and blowing snow conditions for its engine inlet barrier filter (IBF) systems for the Eurocopter AS 350B/BA/B2/B3/B4 and EC 130B4.
Rockwell International NA-265-80 Sabreliner, Brownwood, Texas, May 9, 2005–The NTSB blamed bird ingestion for the damage to the first-stage compressor of the Sabreliner’s left engine that caused loss of thrust. The incident happened during the takeoff roll, just after V1.
Agusta Aerospace has selected Aerospace Filtration Systems (AFS) to develop and certify a high-performance inlet barrier filter (IBF) for the A119 Koala. The modular design will allow a direct replacement of the FOD screen or engine air particle separator. AFS is targeting a mid-year certification for the system that will be available to existing Koala customers as well as future deliveries.
This chain has no name but owns 22 FBOs, is backed by a large investment firm and continues to seek opportunities to build or buy more. A look at the “Business Services Industry” section of majority owner Allied Capital’s Web site reveals a logo and link to Mercury Air Group/Mercury Air Centers. Allied Capital owns 17 Mercury Air Centers FBOs, but the link doesn’t lead to a page about only those FBOs.
