Local changes in magnetic variation demanded that Runway 9L/27R at Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) be renumbered 10L/28R. On May 3, the airport also began a number of other construction projects that will continue through September next year, including the permanent decommissioning of the airport’s crosswind Runway 13/31 as well as significant new taxiway construction in advance of the opening of a new Runway 10R/28L. For the next 17 months, FLL’s only operational runway will be 10L/28R.

The super-midsize Gulfstream G280 recently set 15 new city-pair speed records as part of the company’s reliability demonstration program, the Savannah, Ga.-based aircraft manufacturer announced today. To date, the G280 has established 22 speed records since setting its first in May.

Sheltair is undertaking a $13.6 million facility expansion at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. The first phase includes a new 134,806-sq-ft hangar, complete with office spaces, that will open in the coming months. The hangar’s 28-foot-high doors will accept a variety of business aircraft, up to a Gulfstream G650. Phases two and three will increase the total area of the project from 11 to 18.92 acres and the square footage to 359,000. The final two phases will be under way next year.

Pilots taxiing at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) are being asked to pay special attention as they approach Runway 13/31, especially during construction season when the runway is active more often than usual. A new airport notice, FLL 2012-09-12, says runway incursions have resulted from pilot inattention. “Aircraft southbound on Taxiway ‘Q’ are failing to hold short of RWY 13/31 when required by ATC. Aircraft taxiing to RWY 9L via Taxiway ‘P’ and Taxiway ‘E’ are failing to turn left at Taxiway ‘E’ and enter RWY 13/31 instead.”

The world’s busiest airport in terms of overall passenger traffic has added a new international terminal. The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport opened May 16 after more than a decade of planning and nearly four years of construction.

FBO services provider Sheltair has started construction on a new $13.6 million facility at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Situated on 11 acres on the west side of the airport, the first phase of the project is slated to open early next year and will feature more than 134,000 sq ft of hangar and office space. Two more phases set to start by 2014 will eventually increase the size of the FBO to nearly 19 acres and more than double its square footage.

Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) plans to close the current 5,200-foot south east-west runway (9R/27L) at 10 p.m. EDT on April 17, in preparation for construction of a new south runway.

Construction began at the end of January on a runway expansion project at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport with a price tag of nearly $800 million. The work will shift and lengthen Runway 9R/27L from its current 5,276 feet to 8,000 feet, giving the rapidly growing airport two parallel runways that can accommodate airline flights. The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s capacity from 84 flights per hour to more than 100.

Odyssey Aviation Bahamas has opened two handling locations on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The new locations are at Governors Harbour Airport (MYEM) and Rock Sound Airport (MYER). Sylvie McCartney is station manager for both locations.

A high-level U.S. industry and government committee has recommended to the FAA that three capability areas requiring operators to equip their aircraft–automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), required navigation performance (RNP) and data communications–be prioritized in rolling out the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
