Embraer has begun construction of an executive jet service center at Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz. The center, scheduled to open in mid-2008, will be one of three U.S. facilities dedicated to maintaining the Phenom 100, Phenom 300 and Legacy 600.

Attempting to land during extreme weather conditions, a Learjet 55 ran off the end of the runway moments after touchdown at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE), Fla., on July 19, shearing the main and nose landing gear and resulting in what an NTSB investigator called “significant hull damage.” There were no passengers aboard for the repositioning flight from Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
The Air Transport Association (ATA), which called the House’s bill “business as usual,” and its various airline members are still pushing hard for user fees. In an e-mail last week to frequent fliers, United Airlines chairman, president and CEO Glenn Tilton requested the airline’s most loyal customers support user fees, claiming that the fees will support air traffic modernization.

The last time the Super Bowl was held in Miami, in 1999, the concept of regular temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) was yet to be revealed to the aviation world and traffic flowed smoothly, bringing spectators to watch the Denver Broncos crush the Atlanta Falcons 34 to 19. Fast-forward eight years and Miami was again host to the Super Bowl, but this time a TFR kept the skies over Dolphin Stadium free of general aviation traffic.
Sheltair Aviation Services (Booth No. 4600) has completed the renovation of its flagship facility at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. In addition to cosmetic improvements such as new interior furnishings and a redesigned customer-service station, the $1.2 million renovation enlarges the business center and flight-planning area. The Quick Turn café, also added as part of the enovation, is expected to open soon.
Looking for a new Midwest gateway airport into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)? Look no further than Port Columbus International Airport in Ohio. As of August 24, Port Columbus is a Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) gateway, a designation that allows certain general aviation operations, including corporate and on-demand charter, to fly directly from Port Columbus to Washington National.
Skyservice and Imperial Oil Aviation have expanded their relationship at the Calgary International Airport, with Skyservice now designated an Esso Avitat dealer on the field. Established in Montreal in 1986, Skyservice adds Calgary as its third facility. Pilots have rated Skyservice Avitat Toronto as one of the top 10 FBOs in North, Central and South America in the past five annual AIN FBO surveys.
The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has agreed to extend the hours of customs operations at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Executive Airport (FXE) from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The trial period started June 27 and will be in effect for 120 days, at which time Customs will assess whether or not the extra hours of service should be permanent and whether additional staffing and more coverage will be needed.
A new FBO terminal is under construction at Montego Bay Sangster International Airport in Jamaica. The 4,500-sq-ft IAM Jet Centre-Montego Bay will offer in-house customs and immigration processing as well as typical FBO amenities such as a private meeting room, high-speed Internet access and covered, discrete access to ground transportation.
