NTSB Details Fort Lauderdale Cheyenne Accident

The Piper Cheyenne that crashed shortly after takeoff on March 15 from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) in Florida may have been attempting to return to the airport after encountering an unknown system failure, according to preliminary NTSB data.

The aircraft departed FXE at 4:20 p.m. local time for a short maintenance test flight at the time of the crash. The pilot and two passengers were killed when the aircraft stalled after takeoff from Runway 8, struck the ground and burst into flames.

Florida Jet Center Adds Venezuela Certification

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport-based Florida Jet Center has recently been certified by the Instituto Nacional de Aeronautica Civil–Venezuela (INAC). The 26-year-old FAA Part 145 repair station specializes in Learjet maintenance. “We have already begun to establish long-term relationships with Venezuelan customers and look forward to the opportunity to provide maintenance to our future customers,” said Terry Robertson, owner and president of Florida Jet Center.

The NTSB has issued a preliminary report on a Dec. 28, 2011, incident in which a Cessna Citation VII was substantially damaged when it departed the runway during an emergency landing at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) and crashed into an airport perimeter fence. The Citation had just departed from FXE on a Part 91 flight to Teterboro, N.J. when, according to the crew, they began experiencing “extreme” difficulty in controlling the aircraft. The captain reported that he needed to apply “a little left control” before the Citation entered a slow right turn that he could not stop.

Hop-A-Jet Charter introduces outside maintenance

With the recent receipt of an FAR Part 145 repair station certificate, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Hop-A-Jet is now offering maintenance to outside customers, primarily on Learjets and Challengers. The move is an extension of the charter firm’s in-house maintenance facility that heretofore has been servicing the company’s fleet of 14 Learjets and Challengers.
Banyon acquires Cav-Air at Fort Lauderdale Exec

Banyan Air Service president Don Campion announced earlier this year his FBO has acquired the assets and adjoining leasehold formerly owned by Cav-Air at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Executive Airport (FXE). The new real estate adds 35 acres of prime center-field area to Banyan’s existing 50 acres. Assets included in the deal were Cav-Air’s fixed-wing maintenance division, parts distribution business and line-service concession.
