PIPER PA-31-350, HOLLYWOOD, FLA., JAN. 1, 2002–One passenger died and four others were seriously injured when the pilot was forced to ditch into the Atlantic Ocean after declaring a minimum fuel condition to Miami Center. The flight was en route from North Eleuthera Island to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). As the pilot received a handoff to the FLL tower, he declared an emergency.

Starlite Aviation Catering has opened a facility in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,“just minutes from Hollywood International Airport.” It is the first major expansion for the company, established in 1985 and headquartered in West Palm Beach, Fla. The new location will handle orders through its West Palm Beach call center but will serve half a dozen Fort Lauderdale-area airports, including Kendall-Tamiami, Miami International and Opa Locka.

With the recent receipt of an FAR Part 145 repair station certificate, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Hop-A-Jet is now offering maintenance to outside customers, primarily on Learjets and Challengers. The move is an extension of the charter firm’s in-house maintenance facility that heretofore has been servicing the company’s fleet of 14 Learjets and Challengers.

Banyan Air Service president Don Campion announced earlier this year his FBO has acquired the assets and adjoining leasehold formerly owned by Cav-Air at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Executive Airport (FXE). The new real estate adds 35 acres of prime center-field area to Banyan’s existing 50 acres. Assets included in the deal were Cav-Air’s fixed-wing maintenance division, parts distribution business and line-service concession.

The opening of a public-use heliport isn’t as rare as, say, the passage of a really visible comet, or a Mets victory in a World Series. But only just. That’s why the recent opening of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.’s new downtown heliport was so remarkable. Before the June 5 opening of the new facility, there were 265 authorized private helipads in the state of Florida and just two public-use heliports, only one of which was in a downtown area.

Aero Toy Store, already expanding its interior completion and refurbishment facilities in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., expects to open a 45,000-sq-ft completion and refurbishment center this month at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal. The center will include upholstery and cabinetry shops.

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport FBO Jetscape Services has secured new investments that will help it launch and develop a chain of FBOs. Jetscape partnered with the Frost Group, an investment firm headquartered in Miami, and is planning to expand the Fort Lauderdale facility and add FBOs in the U.S. and outside the U.S. Jetscape celebrated its fifth anniversary on September 7.

Embraer has begun construction of an executive jet service center at Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz. The center, scheduled to open in mid-2008, will be one of three U.S. facilities dedicated to maintaining the Phenom 100, Phenom 300 and Legacy 600.

Crew and passengers of private aircraft flying into Miami for Super Bowl XLI on February 4 need to keep important security changes in mind. The FAA is expected to issue a TFR that will cover a 30-nm radius around Dolphin Stadium, effective from at least two hours before the game until two or more hours after it. That means no general aviation traffic into or out of area airports.
