In a development that speaks volumes about the ongoing state of new helicopter technology development in America today, Boeing on July 12 revealed the 13th iteration of its much modified, through many variants and sub-variants, military CH-47 Chinook, ironically unveiling the new helicopter on the 40th anniversary year of the first flight of the number-one Chinook prototype.

 Boeing has named Ralph Boyce president of Boeing Southeast Asia. Boyce succeeds Douglas Miller, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems vice president and leader of the Boeing Singapore office, and Paul Walters, who led Boeing’s business activities in Southeast Asia. Miller and Walters are retiring. Boyce previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Thailand as a member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service.

Helicopter pioneer Frank Piasecki, who died two weeks ago at age 88, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the rotorcraft world. Piasecki is well known for developing the Army’s CH-47 Chinook and the Navy’s CH-46 Sea Knight twin-rotor helicopters, which are both now built by Boeing’s rotorcraft division in eastern Pennsylvania.

Frank Piasecki, president and founder of Piasecki Aircraft, has been awarded the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Lifetime Achievement Trophy. A reception was held at a Senate office building in Washington, D.C., followed by
a ceremony at the museum, where Piasecki was presented with the award.
