A nonprofit digital rights advocacy organization filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation last month, demanding its constituent agency, the FAA, release information on who is operating or applying to operate unmanned aircraft in civilian airspace. The San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) alleges that the FAA “wrongfully withheld” information sought through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

A federal judge for the District of Columbia has ruled that aircraft tail numbers submitted for blockage under NBAA’s Block Aircraft Registration Request (Barr) program must be made available in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by ProPublica, “an independent, nonprofit newsroom.” But the ruling does not permit the disclosure of real-time flight data, historical data or operator names.

Investigative journalism organization ProPublica filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in December, asking the FAA to release the list of requests for aircraft to be blocked under the NBAA Block Aircraft Registry Request (BARR) program.

The NTSB yesterday began to release all accident investigation public dockets to its public Web site in accordance with the NTSB Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Improvement plan. According to the Safety Board, this effort further brings the agency into compliance with legislative and executive mandates aimed at improving the U.S. government’s use of electronic media to foster a more open and transparent government.
