What can you say about an airplane that performs better than most people expect, as the Hawker series always has? The old Hawker 800A I flew was easy to flight plan for the most part. Fill the tanks with fuel, fill the seats and go from almost any airport with a reasonable runway length.

Ground test runs started last month on the 4,900-pound-thrust TFE731-50, Honeywell’s newest business jet engine. The engine, featuring integrated nacelle and thrust-reverser systems, produced more than 5,000 pounds of thrust in a test cell on its first run, the company said. The engine is scheduled to begin flight testing on Honeywell’s Falcon 20 this summer.

Raytheon Aircraft revealed five new executive appointments, the third reshuffling of senior manage-ment designed to improve the company’s business and customer support since James Schuster became chairman and CEO in mid-2001. The changes fall in the midst of a significant decrease in sales and deliveries.

Eagle Creek Aviation Services (ECAS) is opening a Learjet Service Center at Eagle Creek Airport (EYE) in Indianapolis. The company’s FAA Diamond Award-winning repair station will work on Learjet 23s through 25s. Located a few miles northwest of the city center, the facility anchors the regional airport. EYE is the closest airport to downtown Indianapolis and the growing business/technology corridor on the city’s northwest side.

Raytheon Aircraft has awarded Montreal’s Innotech Aviation Gold Bar status for service center excellence for Hawkers and King Airs. The award recognizes superior achievement in four major areas of product support: spares availability, tools and tooling, training and library currency. Innotech achieved an overall rating of 95 percent
in each area.

Premier Aircraft of East Alton, Ill., has entered an agreement with Honeywell Aerospace to upgrade the existing TFE731-3-1C and TFE731-3D-1C engines installed on Falcon 50s to a TFE731-4-1C configuration. Premier will market, develop, engineer and certify the “50Dash4” upgrade, which includes engine installation, related hardware and cockpit instrumentation.

Judging by the mood at last month’s NBAA Convention in Las Vegas, the good old days are most assuredly back for the business aviation industry. A record number of companies were shoehorned into more than a million square feet of exhibition space at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and there was a seemingly endless line of aircraft at nearby Henderson Executive Airport.

While no manufacturers actually launched new aircraft at the NBAA Convention last month, several did commit to major improvements for their existing products. Notably, Cessna, Piaggio and Bombardier announced extensive upgrades–involving newer or more powerful engines, avionics and/or interior makeovers–for their CJ1 and CJ2, Avanti and Learjet 40 business airplanes, respectively.
