After four years of flight tests, the first upgraded Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy was redelivered to the U.S. Air Force late last month. The most significant of the more than 70 changes in the reliability enhancement and re-engining program is the replacement of the four GE TF39 turbofans with modern GE CF6-80C2 engines that deliver 22 percent more thrust, improved fuel consumption and lower noise.

A single Dutch child out of 104 occupants survived this morning’s crash of an Afriqiya Airways Airbus A330-200 in Tripoli, Libya, the airline confirmed today. The Airbus, operating scheduled service as Flight 8U771 from Johannesburg to Tripoli, crashed short of the runway on approach at about 6 a.m. local time.
General Electric has started wind-tunnel testing of multiple one-fifth-scale configurations for its open-rotor engine to identify the optimum blade design. Minimal noise output and minimal specific fuel consumption are primary benefits derived from the two counter-rotating stages of blades.
General Electric (GE) has purchased a 51-percent share of Airfoil Technologies International Singapore, a joint venture between GE and Teleflex, for $300 million in cash. GE previously held a 49-percent share in the company. ATI Singapore, which started operations in 1998, is a repair facility for compressor airfoils.
Chromalloy CF6 gas turbine blades have reached the 10,000 flight-hour mark for the first time with an unidentified major airline. The blades are produced by BELAC, Chromalloy’s joint venture with various commercial carriers who are attempting to avoid the high cost of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) blades by using alternative parts manufacturer approval (PMA) blades.
Pratt & Whitney has signed two more contracts for its EcoPower engine washing service. Amsterdam-based charter operator ArkeFly has inked a three-year agreement for its fleet of PW4060 and CFM56-7 turbofans, while Hawaiian Airlines renewed a previous agreement, signing up for five more years. Hawaiian uses PW4060, GE CF6-80A2 and Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines. Pratt’s EcoPower reduces fuel burn by up to a claimed 1.2 percent.
As concern for the environment gathers urgency, a number of manufacturers are studying the use of biofuels, which they consider a low-CO2 alternative to petroleum-based fuels.
GE Aviation is transferring responsibility for GE CF34-3 engine parts to Boeing subsidiary Aviall Services. Under the exclusive distributor agreement signed by GE Aviation and Aviall Services, Aviall will be responsible for forecasting, ordering and delivering all genuine OEM replacement parts that are unique to CF34-3 engines.
