Nine contracts worth more than $630 million were awarded to MTU Maintenance last November. “The deals we made again demonstrate that amid a difficult economic environment, MTU remains competitive and well positioned,” commented Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines. The agreements signed in part are long-term, up to 10-year arrangements covering V2500, CF6 and PW2000 engines. They come mostly from the U.S. and Europe.

Brian Rowe, former head of GE Aviation, died February 22. He was 75. Rowe joined GE in 1957 and later led the CF6 engine program. He was named head of GE Aviation in 1979. Rowe launched the CF34 turbofan for business and regional jets, the F110 for the F-16 fighter and the CF6-80C2, which powers the Airbus A300/A300-600/A310 series, the Boeing 747-300/400, MD-11 and Lockheed Martin C-5.
Orders for as many as 250 new General Electric (GE) GEnx engines are expected here at the Paris Air Show this week as the Boeing 787 program gathers pace after last year’s hesitant start. Announcements will come as Boeing prepares for the launch of the stretched 747 Advanced (for which it predicts a market for up to 300), and Airbus launches its A350 variant of the A330–both programs representing applications of the new engine.
Never before has commercial air transport come under such scrutiny for its environmental impact. While aircraft have made far more progress in terms of reducing fuel consumption and emissions per passenger carried in recent years, the relentless overall growth of air traffic has led to increasing pressure from the environmental lobby to reduce the noise and emissions produced by modern powerplants.
Two Indian airlines have between them chosen General Electric CF6-80E1, GEnx and GE90-115B engines worth more than $2.5 billion to power new Boeing aircraft while a third has opted for GE/Snecma CFM56-5Bs to power its new Airbus A320s.
Since Snecma dropped the idea of taking a share in General Electric’s GEnx turbofan program the two long-time partners now find themselves competing in the regional jet engine arena.
Nordam is to obtain Middle River Aircraft Systems’s General Electric CF6 thrust-reverser maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business. It also is to be appointed exclusive authorized provider for original equipment manufacturer MRO services.
