Trajen FBO Network, which late last year acquired ski-country’s Aspen Base Operation, has further enriched its portfolio of FBOs in another, very different, resort area. Last month, management of the growing chain announced it had purchased the Ranger Jet Center FBO at Kissimmee Gateway Airport near Orlando, Fla., home of Disney World, Universal Studios and several other vacation theme parks.

Hawker Beechcraft King Air C90A, Pagosa Springs, Colo., Oct. 4, 2007–The Eagle Air Med King Air was destroyed and the three occupants were killed when it crashed in the mountains in night VMC. The flight was en route to San Luis Valley Regional Airport, Alamosa, Colo., to pick up a patient. The wreckage was found just west of the Continental Divide trail at an elevation of 11,900 feet msl.

Airports within six critical areas in the mountain passes of Colorado now have automated weather observing systems (AWOS) in operation since installations started last year under a program paid for by the state legislature and the Colorado Aeronautics Board. Six more installations are to be in operation by next summer.

Aspen Avionics, the small Albuquerque, N.M. start-up firm that made headlines earlier this year after staving off a patent lawsuit filed by Eclipse Aviation, is preparing to break into the big time with a new line of cockpit products scheduled to make their debut later this month at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis.

XJet’s private jet facility at Denver’s Centennial Airport opened late last month. XJet members get to use the new facility, which will eventually include four large hangars for member aircraft, a lounge, library, fine art gallery, conference rooms, underground car parking and a five-star restaurant. Members receive a substantial fuel discount that will also be available at participating FBOs elsewhere.

Following the name change of the former Jefferson County Airport in Broomfield, Colo., to Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport last October, the tower’s appellation was modified to “Metro Tower.” Pilots were asked to stop using the old “Jeffco Tower” moniker as of March 15.

Eclipse Aviation and Aspen Avionics last month settled a patent dispute over the AT300 hazard awareness display. Under the settlement agreement, Eclipse dropped a competing patent claim in exchange for 1 percent of Aspen common stock. The VLJ maker had contended that Aspen cofounders Peter Lyons and Jeff Bethel developed the AT300 product while they worked at Eclipse and, therefore, the patent for the product should belong to Eclipse.
