Local officials and Honda Aero executives yesterday broke ground for the new engine maker’s Burlington, N.C. headquarters. The Honda Aero headquarters and manufacturing facility will cost about $27 million and includes a 58,400-sq-ft production plant and 8,000-sq-ft test cell on 82 acres off the approach end of Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport’s Runway 24. Construction should be finished late next year or early in 2009.

Dassault Falcon Jet announced last month that as a central thrust in its strategy to bolster customer support it has spent more than $7 million on the Wilmington, Del. service facility and FBO that it bought from Atlantic Aviation in October 2000. The NTSB recently issued a factual report on the crash of a Cessna 208B Caravan in Manteo, N.C., on Christmas Day 2002. The ATP pilot was killed and Caravan N1122Y was substantially damaged when it crashed into Croatan Sound, near Manteo, at 1 a.m. in IMC. More parts of Honda’s aerospace puzzle are coming together as the company announced today that its GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines (2,000-pound-thrust class) would be made in North Carolina, where the HondaJet will be manufactured. To date, the engine has been selected to power the Spectrum Freedom and the HondaJet.
