Local officials and Honda Aero executives yesterday broke ground for the new engine maker’s Burlington, N.C. headquarters. The Honda Aero headquarters and manufacturing facility will cost about $27 million and includes a 58,400-sq-ft production plant and 8,000-sq-ft test cell on 82 acres off the approach end of Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport’s Runway 24. Construction should be finished late next year or early in 2009.

Dassault Falcon Jet announced last month that as a central thrust in its strategy to bolster customer support it has spent more than $7 million on the Wilmington, Del. service facility and FBO that it bought from Atlantic Aviation in October 2000. Including the undisclosed purchase price, DFJ expects to invest $30 million in the facility all told.

For General Electric, the 50/50 partnership with Honda to produce and market the HF120 turbofan is a return to GE’s roots in the small-turbine-engine marketplace. “This relationship with Honda is somewhat of a renaissance,” said Bill Dwyer, president of the GE Honda Aero Engines partnership. “If you look at the heritage of GE, our business started as a small-engine company.”

A spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Labor said the agency would need until at least the middle of next month to finish its investigation into the July 31 death of an American Eagle fleet service clerk at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The accident, which occurred on the RDU ramp between 8:30 and 9 p.m., involved a parked Embraer regional jet and a baggage tug driven by the deceased, 43-year-old Lufuluabo Kalonji.

The NTSB recently issued a factual report on the crash of a Cessna 208B Caravan in Manteo, N.C., on Christmas Day 2002. The ATP pilot was killed and Caravan N1122Y was substantially damaged when it crashed into Croatan Sound, near Manteo, at 1 a.m. in IMC. The aircraft was operated by Telford Aviation, as Telford Flight 1279, a Part 91 positioning flight.

More parts of Honda’s aerospace puzzle are coming together as the company announced today that its GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines (2,000-pound-thrust class) would be made in North Carolina, where the HondaJet will be manufactured. To date, the engine has been selected to power the Spectrum Freedom and the HondaJet.

North Carolina representative Cary Allred is sure enough that GE Honda Aero Engines is planning to build its new engine plant at Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport that he is publicly revealing the engine maker’s plans ahead of any formal announcement.

In a move that wasn’t overly surprising, Honda Aircraft announced on February 9 that it has decided to build its world headquarters and HondaJet manufacturing plant at Piedmont-Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C., site of the company’s research and development facility.
