Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) of India acquired a 75.1-percent stake each in Australia’s Aerostaff Australia (AA) and Gippsland Aeronautics (GA) last week. Mahindra Systech president and M&M board member Hemant Luthra told AIN, “These acquisitions have been made under subsidiary Mahindra Aerospace with a total commitment of approximately $37.4 million over the next five years.

Three popular unpressurized twin turboprops from the past have or will soon re-enter production.

British Columbia-based Viking Air Ltd. acquired the type certificate and production rights to the DHC-6 Twin Otter from Bombardier in 2006 and could start customer deliveries by next year. Viking already owns the type certificates for seven other deHavilland aircraft, including the DHC-3 Otter and the four-engine DHC-7 Dash 7.

The dwindling ranks of Australian-designed and -built Nomad twin turboprops may yet grow again as Gippsland Aeronautics has purchased the Nomad program and plans to relaunch the airplane as the Next-Generation Nomad. Gippsland currently manufactures the piston GA-8 Airvan at its factory at Latrobe Regional Airport in Morwell, Victoria.

Gippsland Aeronautics, Australia’s only commercial aircraft manufacturer, is developing a 10-seat turboprop version of its eight-seat, GA-8 Airvan piston single, which was certified by the Australian CAA in December 2000. The turboprop GA-10T Taska is part of a three-year joint research-and-development program of Gippsland and Helitech of Brisbane, Australia.

Amsafe, the Phoenix-based company producing an inflatable seat restraint certified for the CRJ700 and CRJ900 regional jets last year, expects to certify a version for general aviation aircraft by next summer. The Amsafe Aviation Inflatable Restraint (AAIR) resembles a normal three-point seatbelt in size and shape but contains an airbag that deploys away from the body upon sensing a sudden impact. The system is independent of aircraft power.

The 10-seat Taska, a turboprop derivative of the Gippsland Aeronautics GA-8 Airvan piston single, “is only at the concept stage,” according to Michael Hall, Gippsland marketing director. “I would expect at least 12 months before we have a prototype flying,” he told AIN in February.
