Following delivery last week of the first 787-9 rudder built in China by Chengdu Civil Aviation (CCAC), Boeing extended its supply chain further for yet another airfoil subassembly, choosing the UK’s GKN Aerospace to build the winglet for the 737 Max. GKN joins Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD) in South Korea as co-supplier of the raked, dual-feather-design winglet.
UK aerostructures and equipment group GKN Aerospace has been contracted by Snecma to provide low-pressure turbine (LPT) cases for the Silvercrest SC-2C engine for the Cessna Citation Longitude. Under a long-term agreement valued at $15.7 million, production of LPT cases by GKN Aerospace-Norway for delivery to Snecma’s Villaroche facility will accelerate as the engine is prepared for the Longitude’s scheduled entry into service in 2017.
GKN Aerospace (Chalet B73, Hall 2b F169) has completed coordination of a nine-nation European project, which has succeeded in developing a new optical ice-monitoring concept. The new system promises fully automated inflight ice protection for the first time.
UK aerostructures and equipment group GKN Aerospace has been contracted by Snecma to provide low-pressure turbine (LPT) cases for the Silvercrest SC-2C engine for the Cessna Citation Longitude business jet. Under a long-term agreement valued at £10 million ($15.7 million), production of LPT cases by GKN Aerospace-Norway for delivery to Snecma’s Villaroche facility will accelerate as the engine is prepared for the Longitude’s scheduled entry into service in 2017.
With defense budget cuts starting to bite, GKN Aerospace (Chalets (B) 73, Hall 2b Stand F140) is stepping up its efforts to reduce dependence on military business. At a recent press briefing, the UK-based group’s CEO Marcus Bryson predicted that in 2013 almost 70 percent of revenues are likely to come from civil orders, with Airbus remaining its largest customer (accounting for 32 percent of revenues in 2012).
A growing need to access top engineering expertise, which exists in India today, has led GKN Aerospace to launch a new engineering center in Bangalore with around 100 skilled engineers, of which 70 will be transferred from its new Engine Operations (formerly Volvo Aero) office, according to a GKN spokeswoman.
GKN Aerospace’s acquisition of Volvo Aero is starting to bear fruit, giving the UK-based aerostructures group a significant boost in this growing market segment. This year, the addition of the Sweden-based engine systems manufacturer is expected to boost total revenues from GKN’s aerospace division by approximately $700 million, to $3.5 billion.
GKN Aerospace is showcasing emergency flotation and fuel system technologies here at its Heli-Expo booth (No. N2608).
GKN Aerospace won a contract from Triumph Aerostructures’ Vought Aircraft division this week to design, build and supply composite winglets and ailerons for the Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000 ultra-long-range business jets. The ailerons will be developed and manufactured at GKN’s wing structures operation in Munich, Germany, while the winglets will be fabricated at its Isle of Wight facility in the UK. The company is already contracted to provide winglets for the Bombardier CSeries and supplies winglets for several other business aircraft.
GKN Aerospace was awarded a contract this week for the design, development and production of transparencies for Bombardier’s Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets. Initial test items will be delivered in 2013. The contract includes both the cockpit and passenger cabin windows that will incorporate GKN’s CrystalVue I abrasion resistant coating for the ultra-long-range business jets. Design and production will take place at the GKN facility in Garden Grove, Calif.
