Now that we’ve all gotten accustomed to acronyms like Rnav, RNP, LPV and all the others, the next big game changer will be TBO, for trajectory-based operations, sometimes loosely thought of as user-preferred trajectories. Oddly enough, trajectory flying was the fundamental technique used way back by pilots flying the mail in their biplanes and in early passenger operations.
A proposed Airworthiness Directive for Eclipse 500s would require changes to the electronic flight information system and the airplane flight manuals. The proposed
AD stems from reports of uncommanded changes to the communications radio frequency, altitude preselect and/or transponder codes. The FAA said the AD would “correct faulty integration of hardware and software” on Eclipses.
Garmin announced yesterday at EAA AirVenture that its new electronic stability and protection (ESP) stability augmentation system will be available on G1000-equipped King Air 200s later this year. ESP is being developed for G1000 and G3000 systems and helps prevent stall and spin onset, steep spirals “or other loss-of-control situations should the pilot become distracted, disoriented or incapacitated during flight,” according to Garmin.
The Garmin G1000 glass cockpit system on Tuesday received FAA STC approval for Cessna CitationJets. According to Garmin, the approval for the RVSM-compliant system covers S/Ns 0001 through 0359. The G1000 suite weighs 100 pounds less than the original avionics and allows pilots to fly Waas approaches with Garmin’s GFC 700 autopilot, as well as have electronic charts, datalink weather and an optional synthetic vision system.
Aviation Communications & Surveillance Systems (ACSS), a U.S.-based maker of TCAS and ADS-B avionics, has started equipping dozens of airliners in support of a European-sponsored technology demonstration program aimed at saving fuel on transatlantic flights.
Thales Aerospace is busy developing the flight decks for the Sukhoi Superjet 100, ATR 600 series, Sikorsky S-76D and Airbus A350 at its Toulouse facility. At the same time, the company is working to visualize what the cockpit of a next-generation widebody might look like 20 years from now. The biggest potential breakthrough from this could be single pilot operations for commercial aircraft.
Vista Aviation of Pacoima, Calif., has completed the first STCed helicopter installation of an Avidyne EX600 multifunction display (MFD)–in a Eurocopter AS350B AStar. “We have installed quite a few Avidyne MFDs, and we were excited about being the first dealer to install an EX600 in a helicopter,” said Bill DeBarmore, Vista Aviation’s avionics manager.
Having been dogged by cost overruns, Boeing's avionics modernization program (AMP) for the C-130 Hercules has passed its Defense Acquisition Board Milestone C, allowing low-rate initial production (LRIP) to begin. The AMP provides an integrated avionics system to prolong the useful career of the U.S. Air Force's legacy Hercules fleet, and includes full night-vision-goggle compatibility, glass cockpits and digital systems.
MD Helicopters is expected to begin offering a glass cockpit for new MD500 series beginning next month. United Rotorcraft Solutions is finishing flight testing on the STC it is developing for MD. United president David Brigham said the STC will also be offered as a retrofit for existing 500s through MD’s repair station in Mesa and through his company. He estimates installation time to be two to three weeks.
Banyan Air Service (Booth No. 629) recently completed an avionics installation on a Bombardier Challenger 604. The installation, which was done at the customer’s home base during a minimum maintenance inspection, included EMS Aviation’s high-speed data system, TW300 DirectTV and BluRay video with high-definition monitors. The tail section was modified and outfitted with a radome to encompass two parabolic antennas.
