Decatur, Texas-based United Rotorcraft Solutions (URS) has delivered the first of two Bell 407s customized for aeromedical operations to Halo-Flight of Corpus Christi, Texas. Exhibiting at Booth No. 1337, URS is highlighting its completions and refurbishment services, which also include maintenance and overhaul. Halo-Flight accepted its first URS-completed 407 on December 19.
CMC Electronics is displaying its TacView portable mission display for the first time, here at the Singapore Airshow. In October 2007 the U.S. Air Force chose TacView was chosen for its AC-130 gunships. Measuring five by seven inches, the touch-sensitive display can serve many functions, including targeting imagery, moving maps, checklists and approach charts. It is small enough to mount in virtually any cockpit, and it has a knee-pad option.
Avidyne and S-Tec announced the receipt of an STC to retrofit Cessna Conquest II twin-engine turboprops with the Alliant flat-panel cockpit. The required modifications, approval flights and FAA paperwork were completed at S-Tec’s headquarters in Mineral Wells, Texas.

If you’re planning on flying a Cessna Mustang, Embraer Phenom, HondaJet or Diamond D-Jet, you’ll have to learn how to run Garmin’s G1000 avionics system. And while you might already be used to modern EFIS with tape displays for altitude and airspeed and widescreen ADIs, HSIs and moving maps, the Garmin system has its own design philosophy. In a historic first the FAA has issued a TSO for the synthetic-vision EFIS developed by Chelton Flight Systems of Boise, Idaho. Intended primarily for the high-performance piston and turboprop markets, the system is unique in aviation because of its ability to portray 3-D views of terrain and obstacles and so-called highway-in-the-sky (HITS) guidance cues on a full-color primary flight display.
XM Satellite Radio and Weather Works, an affiliate of Baron Services, have joined forces to provide Nexrad weather maps, Metars, TAFs and other data through XM’s proprietary satellite system, which also beams 100 channels of digital audio to special receivers, mainly in cars.
The Avidyne Entegra avionics system–particularly the revolutionary left-side primary flight display (PFD)–is new territory for most piston pilots. Recently TSO’d, it’s a $26,500 option on the 310-hp Cirrus SR22. The large (10.4-inch diagonal) display shows airspeed and altitude on vertical tapes usually found in the front office of a jet.
Two days of test flying are all that remain before the FAA can put its stamp of approval on T2CAS, the combined TCAS and TAWS product from Phoenix-based ACSS. Pilots from the FAA’s Long Beach, Calif. certification office plan to evaluate the system for the final time in ACSS’ King Air C90 test aircraft later this month.
