Eurocopter last month released the first photo of the actual cockpit of the EC175 medium twin. Previously, only mockups were shown and the prototype doors were kept almost closed during its official introduction on December 17 last year.
Ground proximity warning system
In response to an NTSB recommendation, Honeywell is revising the software of its Mark XXII enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) for helicopters. The Safety Board last month warned that the failure of the radio altimeter could prevent the EGPWS look-ahead feature from functioning in flight, unbeknownst to the pilot.
Stevens Aviation last month said it has gained an STC for installation of Honeywell’s runway awareness and advisory system (Raas) in the Learjet 60, adding another element to a major cockpit and cabin upgrade program for the model. The Raas software is part of the airplane’s enhanced ground proximity warning system.
Honeywell regularly brings its company-owned Eurocopter AS350 (N350FD) to Heli-Expo, and this year is no exception. “The helicopter is certified for experimental and market survey use,” explained Steve Kilbourne, senior test pilot. “We use it for development of Honeywell equipment and demonstrations to customers and potential customers.”

Sandel Avionics is concluding certification flight testing of its helicopter-specific terrain awareness warning system and plans delivery of the $18,950 H-Taws shortly after TSO issuance and certification, expected by early April. Sandel president Gerry Block told AIN that with radio altitude and air data computer inputs the panel-mounted H-Taws will meet or exceed performance of any current Taws for helicopters.
SimCom Training Centers has added Falcon 20 and Westwind II full-flight simulators and a King Air 350 Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 flight-training device to its menu of training programs. The two level-C simulators and the FTD will be located here in Orlando.
Honeywell’s new SmartRunway and SmartLanding technologies have received FAA Technical Standard Order approval. The approval clears the way for installation of the new products as software upgrades to the company’s Mark V and Mark VII enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS). Installation takes one hour, according to a spokesman.
