Erlanger Medical Center’s Life Force aeromed rescue service has become the first in the U.S. to outfit its two Bell 412 helicopters with Honeywell’s Mk XXII enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS). Life Force is a wide-reaching aeromed transport service based in Chattanooga, Tenn., and linking dozens of heath-care facilities throughout a four-state area in the Northeast.

Since the introduction of the enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) in 1996, more than 16,000 airplanes worldwide have been fitted with the Honeywell-manufactured safety device. In that time, the CFIT (controlled flight into terrain) accident rate among aircraft that carry EGPWS has dropped to zero.

Honeywell has started demonstrating an optional software upgrade to its enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) that is intended to curb runway incursions and improve airport safety. Called the runway awareness and advisory system (RAAS), the software-only modification uses the EGPWS unit’s internal database of runways and GPS-derived position to increase pilot situational awareness during taxi, takeoff and landing.

Two days of test flying are all that remain before the FAA can put its stamp of approval on T2CAS, the combined TCAS and TAWS product from Phoenix-based ACSS. Pilots from the FAA’s Long Beach, Calif. certification office plan to evaluate the system for the final time in ACSS’ King Air C90 test aircraft later this month.

Honeywell and ACSS have agreed to let a private arbitrator resolve their ongoing legal dispute over EGPWS patents. As a result, Honeywell has dismissed its lawsuit against ACSS (filed last August in U.S. District Court in Delaware) which had accused the smaller company of infringing patents first applied in the enhanced version of Honeywell’s GPWS.

Technical standard orders for terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) have been revised as TSO C151b, which includes a new class-C category intended for voluntary installations on smaller aircraft not covered by the requirements for class-A and -B TAWS. In March 2005 class-A and -B TAWS are required in turbine aircraft with six or more passenger seats, with class-A systems intended for larger Part 91 airplanes and commercial aircraft.

The legal battle over EGPWS patents between Honeywell and competing manufacturers of TAWS avionics has stretched the limits of civil debate as executives on both sides of the imbroglio now find themselves locked in a war of rhetoric aimed at telling why the other side is wrong.

Effective January 1, newly manufactured European-registered airplanes in air-taxi and other commercial operations and having an mtow of at least 12,500 lb or more than nine passenger seats (but fewer than 30) must be equipped with class-A terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS). A requirement for TAWS retrofits on like aircraft manufactured before January 1 doesn’t go into effect until Jan. 1, 2005.
